11 hour layover in San Fran airport. Where can dad (84) & I rest?

My dad (84) and my son (20) and I (54) are returning from NZ in a few days. Just realized we have an 11 hr layover in San Francisco. Can we pay for a few hours in an airline lounge that has beds, showers, etc? Is this still a thing?

San Francisco Exploratorium - how is it now?

Our family is heading out this weekend on a road trip that will eventually bring us to San Francisco, where we have not been in many years. Last time we were there the Exploratorium was still in the Presidio and our (now adult) kids loved it. Our youngest kid (age 12) has never been; how does the new (or really "new" by now) Exploratorium rate against the original? [more inside]

Covering Up a Tribal Tattoo in the East Bay

I have a three inch by three inch tattoo of a mouse in memorial of a dead relative. I am White and the tattoo is in a ‘tribal’ 2000’s era style. I would like to cover it up with a rat/mouse tattoo that corresponds with the heritage I shared with my relative (Italian, Azores, Portuguese, Russian). I’m looking for either specific artist recommendations or estimates on how much I should expect to pay. I live in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.

How much money is my SF landlord paying to have the backyard cleared?

I rent an apartment in a small apartment building with a big, overgrown backyard. Every year or so, the landlord hires guys to come clear out the overgrowth. He always seems annoyed and put out whenever he finally gets around to doing this. I get the impression it costs him more than he wants to pay. [more inside]

Orthodontic Retainers in San Francisco

My retainers are falling apart, and I need to get new ones. It's been stressfully opaque to try to figure out where to go, though, since pricing seems to vary by clinic. Looking for data points from any SF Mefites: what clinic did you use, and how much was it? I'm looking to get top and bottom Hawley retainers.

Fun corporate event for 60+ in Bay Area

My company will be holding our annual retreat in the Bay Area this October. We're looking for a fun evening event we can stage for the entire staff (a little over 60 total) that's social and inclusive. We have a very diverse staff in every sense of the word—all sorts of ages and backgrounds. We will be staying in the East Bay. Last year, we did a dinner cruise in the Bay, which was a success. Your ideas for something different are most welcome!

Reassure me that I can get a CA driver's license

I have just moved to San Francisco after living overseas for 4 years. My old US license (Massachusetts) expired two weeks ago. I am required to get a CA license within 10 days, and I need a US license anyway for things like Scoot, which I'll be relying on for commuting. Please reassure me that I will be able to prove residency despite a "soft landing" housing situation meaning I don't have a lot of the traditional documentation. [more inside]

California Dreamin': Road Trip Edition

What would you see in California if you were starting out in LA and had a car and 7 days to travel, only caveat being that you need to be in San Diego on the morning of the 8th day? We're going to LA for a family wedding in August. Taking an extra week afterwards to travel around and see as much of California as possible. However, we have to prioritize as we only have 7 days. Flying out from San Diego on the 8th day. We will have a rental car and we're interested in seeing as much as possible, as it will be my first time in California. Driving a lot is not a problem; we love roadtrips, and both of us drive so we can take turns. Please help us plan an itinerary! [more inside]

Want to move across country. How do I do it?

I'm itching for change and would like to move to preferably in the next year. I'm looking into San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City and Portland. I've moved before and to different states/ cities, but this would be the biggest move ever in my life. I need advice on how to find jobs out of state, finding a place to live, and how to get all my junk across country as well. Is it easier to just save up a bunch and move and find a job when I get settled or should I try to get a job and then use that opportunity to move? Any tips or advice would be appreciated. Have you seen these alt. jumping stilts? (Bay Area Maker Faire 2013)

I'm trying to find more about a pair of jumping stilts that I saw at maker faire (2013 Bay Area) that are substantially different form any I've seen online. Does anyone know anything about these - they had a glossy metallic-red (almost Ironman-like?) nearly-knee-high boot instead of the usual clamps, and the spring power seemed to come from a lot of black rubber cording bunched in the rear as if a calf muscle (I don't recall the mechanism, but bungie cording suggests it's different to the blade-spring traditional design). Are these something that can be purchased, or were they a maker-crafted one-off?

How is life in San Francisco different from life in New York City?

I'm a late 20's native New Yorker - grew up in Brooklyn and lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for most of my life. I've lived in San Diego for the past year. Lovely place, but it's not for me. Got a job offer in San Francisco and I'm excited and ready to make the move. I've always loved my visits to San Francisco and its walkability, culture, food, shopping, and diversity have always made it comparable to New York in my mind. I love New York, but I don't want to move to San Francisco expecting it will be just like living in New York. I've already noticed some big differences that I embrace (and some I dislike.) People who have lived in both cities (especially as a young person): what are some of the differences you found between life in New York and life in San Francisco? Thanks!
