I've been scammed!

I got an email that seemed to be from my accountant, saying my tax return docs were complete, clicked on the attachment, and then realized something fishy was going on. [more inside]

The Mystery of the Folding Chair

Email mystery: I run a theatre company called Folding Chair Classical Theatre. The company's email address is the first two words of its name, an at sign, and gmail dot com. For the last several years, I've been getting emails (maybe four a year) from people trying to order folding chairs. The wording of these emails is all very similar to each other, which makes me wonder if this is some kind of scam. But if so, what's the angle? [more inside]

Unsubscribe me, dammit!

Do high-profile companies purposefully break their unsubscribe options? I'm not looking for help with spam. I'm (a) wondering if these companies are scamming and (b) wondering if there's anything I can do about it if they are -- not in terms of stopping the scam from affecting me, but rather in terms of getting the scammers in trouble. Online Calendars

As a follow-up to this question, I'm looking for an online application that will let me set up a calendar and will email me daily reminders of the day's events. I need to do this online, because I move around a lot and am constantly using different PCs (so an Outlook/Eudora/Etc. solution won't work). I would like to be able to get a reminder the night before and one the morning-of. Google suggests there are several such services. Are there any really good ones? Bonus: Has anyone invented one that will phone you or leave your a text message?

Pen Pals

I want some new friends (to add to my old ones), but I'm too busy to actually spend time with people, and I'm also shy and introverted. So I'm looking for email buddies. Fine, but how do I "meet" them? Are there any good sites where people can post personal ads for platonic relationships via email? I'm looking for someplace where I could post a really long, descriptive email about myself. I guess I'm looking for what was once called a "pen pal." (I'm not looking for forums or chat rooms. That's too interactive. I want something more slow-paced and long-winded. I.e letters.)

Email Spoofers

Someone is spoofing email -- making it look like it's coming from me -- and offering to sell people computer equipment. It looks like this is a scam to collect ebay ids. I know about this because one of the guy's emails was returned to me (it couldn't get through to the person he was sending it to). I have his email address. Can I do anything?
