Keeping gmail accounts (and life) secure

One of my gmail accounts is basically the key to my entire life. If I were to lose access for any reason, or if it were to be taken over by someone else, it would be a disaster. What should I do to keep it (and my life generally) more secure? [more inside]

Professional email screening service for people who get abusive email

If a person has something like an embittered ex or family member in their life who will take any unexpected moment to send a new emotionally abusive message from a throwaway address, or via a one cent email money transfer... is there such a thing as a service provider which will screen for all such messages and remove them invisibly from the user, ideally all while credibly not interfering with the rest of your email? Company asking for my personal information to close fraudulent account

Someone used my email address to sign up for a financial account. Now the company wants my personal information to close the account. Obviously, I don't want to give it to them. What should I do next? Am I overthinking this, or should I just reset the password, log in and try to close the account myself? [more inside]

How do you respond to emails that you've taken too long to respond to?

I have several emails in my inbox from the beginning of October. They're mainly from people introducing me to other people, or for wanting to collaborate on work. And I haven't responded, partially because it was a slog of a work month, and partially because it feels too late to respond. As each day passes, it feels harder and harder. I'm curious what language you've used in these situations where your response is late. I have much more time on my plate now and would like to rekindle these potential work relationships.

Help me blow the whistle, not my career (TOR/anon email)

I need to use anonymous email to report something at work. (I've thought this through, it is the only viable option). Will TOR, on my personal tablet, effectively protect my IP address? Note: this device has been on work's guest network where I have to log in. So, if they save IP addresses/logins, and they wanted to look, they could match me up if TOR lets my IP through. Apology Email Etiquette: Do I reply to a reply?

I felt the need to apologize to a semi-notable person (if that matters) whom I have never met and doesn't know me. I emailed them a well written apology and a day later recieved a very gracious reply. Great. However now I don't know if I should reply back and if so, with what? I don't want to seem like I am using the apology as a foot in the door to strike up a conversation. But I also don't want it to seem like their gracious response wasn't appreciated by me, because it was.

Brain hacks for the mildly stalked?

OK, so...it appears I may have acquired a stalker. A very lazy stalker who only pops up to make his/her presence known every couple of months or so, but a stalker nonetheless. I'm doing my best to ignore this and live my life, but I'm feeling very alone in this and would like to know how I can cognitively address the fact that I have no way to make this person stop. Any ideas? [more inside]

Colorblindness Coping: Colorblindness & Windows 7

The nut of the question/problem is this: When I use high-contrast mode in Windows 7, people are receiving emails from me where the text is blank. Is this because windows 7 changes the font to white for me to see it, and then emails that same font to users who have white backgrounds? How can I fix this? I really don't want to ask for special software accommodation at work. I'm private and would really rather just fix it on my own and move on. Snowflakes abound inside. [more inside]

Can't determine if this is a fraudulent email or not...

I received an email at ~4:30 PM (EST) from a @ucia.gov email account. It was in regards to a scholarship program from the CIA to which I had applied, stating that they had liked my online application, and wanted to learn more about me. The problem is that I can't determine, given what I'm looking at, whether it's fraudulent or not. [more inside]

I'm dating-challenged and dropped the ball. How I do pick it back up?

Over last weekend I spent a whole bunch of time with a lovely woman--dinners, picnics, walks, wine under the stars etc. These weren't explicitly dates, but it all seemed pretty romantic. At the end of the evening on Saturday and Sunday we had these awkward pauses when my insecurities and my desire to--give a goodnight kiss? Express my attraction? Or something--were warring. I don't know what she was thinking but it was awkward on both sides. Now I won't see her for a month. Do I email her and explicitly say that I'm interested? [more inside]

Did my email get hacked? What to do now?

I think my old email just got hacked. I received some spam, from my old email address itself, (and the "From" part had my name and email, even though I didn't send it, as the spammer did) and about a dozen "unable to deliver" messages from my old email's "mailer daemon" (this is on yahoo). In those messages and the email that was successfully delivered to me on the old email and my newer accounts, it lists countless numbers of other people and contacts, including high school teachers, bosses, family, friends, potential employers, and even friends of exes. Most of these people aren't even in my contacts list, but I still have emails from them/to them (this is an old but relatively recent email that I've kept for nostalgic reasons). I am mortified that all of these people, none of whom I've spoken to recently in at least the past couple of years (and in some cases, longer), got this spam from "me" out of the blue. Should I delete this email address, in case it may be compromised by a hacker? Should I email these people to apologize, even though we no longer are in touch? I have already changed the password and don't know what to do. Any help would be so appreciated. [more inside]

How to abbreviate multiple degrees

What is the best practice for listing two degrees after a name in an email signature, when the degrees weren't earned as a joint degree?
