"I'm talking house swapping!"
Thinking about signing up for home-swapping registry to make international travel more affordable. Is this a crazy idea? [more inside]
Extended-family trip: many adults with no kids, one family with toddlers
I'm planning an international trip with relatives and in-laws. There are two senior citizen couples, and two couples in their 30s and 40s without kids (this includes me). There's also my cousin's family with two toddlers. We did a previous trip that went well, but the requests for the next trip seem to conflict with each other. Do you see a way to make the conflicting goals work? [more inside]

Travel literature describing South Africa mid-90s?
Have you read some travel literature with detailed, vivid descriptions of South Africa mid-90s? I would be particularly interested in Black American travellers' perspectives. [more inside]
Non-inspirational Travel Books by Women
I don't want to be inspired or learn Big Lessons; I want to enjoy the travels of solo women who get food poisoning, bug-filled hotel rooms, rude service staff, cancelled flights.
Anything that goes wrong is what I'm hoping for.
Iceland travel recommendations?
Hi all, I'm planning a trip to Iceland with a few friends in March. We are women in our mid-40s who enjoy hiking, spas, and restaurants. We will likely arrive on a Thursday and fly out Monday which gives three full days. I'd prefer not to rent a car so perhaps we will do two nights in Reykjavik and two nights in a second location. Would love to see the northern lights and I hear Blue Lagoon is a can't miss. Any other recommendations for day trips, areas to stay, things to do etc? [more inside]
Advice & opinions for cycling in Ireland?
Mefites, please share your experiences and informed opinions w.r.t. a cycling vacation in Ireland this coming August.
We are experienced cyclists who will rent road bikes, maybe electric. We are looking to ride along the Atlantic Coast, starting near Cork. Narrow roads? How do motorists treat cyclists? What is the pavement quality? I assume the weather will be variable…should we have fenders?
Most tours we find are self-guided, so we can pick our own restaurants etc. We are reviewing links found in old mefi posts, but welcome more recent recommendations..
Please help me start daydreaming about a trip to South America.
I want to go to South America, because I've never been. I am at the very earliest, not-even-planning stages of planning. Any suggestions for trips? I don't have a budget or date in mind yet, but let's say two weeks in 2025 or 2026. A tour group could be good so I don't have to deal with fiddly things, so long as there's plenty of free time. What's good at the drive-thru?
So let's say you have to drive across parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. Due to a curse, you can only get your lunch and dinner at places with drive-thru windows, so either fast food or hybrid "fast casual" like Panera and Fazioli's. What are the best orders you'd make at which restaurants? [more inside]

Japan for the Anxious
So we're doing our first trip to Japan this March (Myself, Mrs. Mosley and our Japan-obsessed 15 year old daughter). I'm not the best in crowds, and though I was aware of how bad it can be in Tokyo, stuff I've read recently describes how it's gotten even worse. I'm looking for midsized Japanese cities to visit with interesting things to see and do. Nothing too remote, though. Thanks.

NYC to EWR on Thanksgiving
I'm catching an international flight out of Newark on Thanksgiving Day, departing in the early evening. What's the best way to get to the airport from Manhattan that day (I was going to take the train from Penn Station)? How much extra time should I give myself? Any advice for surviving the experience?
Fun destination ideas for this winter break?
Looking for somewhere fun to go during our winter break (between Christmas and New Year's for about 5 days...two adults). Traveling from the Northeast - Hartford is the most convenient airport for us, but could fly out of Boston or NYC. We're looking for a good value since we know that flights everywhere are at premium prices this time of year. (Basically, a little splurge is ok as long as it's a cool place - I'm just feeling a little uninspired and indecisive and wanted to get some ideas.) [more inside]
Propranolol or Klonopin for anxious/claustrophobic airplane passenger?
I’m an anxious flyer, primarily because of the claustrophobic feeling of being “trapped” in a space I can’t get out of until the plane lands. I am taking a 15-hour international flight next week.
Klonopin usually helps with the anxiety, but I was recently prescribed propranolol, which is working well to control the physical symptoms of anxiety/panic. Wondering if I should take that before the flight, or try a large dose of Klonopin, which might also have the advantage of letting me sleep for at least part of the flight.
Thanks for any advice.
Balancing bed bug fears with clothing care when travelling
I'm going on a short trip soon where I will be staying in 2 different hotels (that seem very nice!) I have some new clothes I would love to wear during this trip. Looking for general advice on my bedbug precautions and specifically whether a post-trip heat treat of these new items is needed, and if so if my idea is properly balancing actually treating them without ruining them. More below! [more inside]
Where/how to pass the time with jet lag in Lisbon
I'm flying into Lisbon next week with my partner and arriving at 10am. The ultimate destination is a small rural town 1.5 hour drive away, where we won't be able to check into our lodging until 3pm. What should we do for 3-4 hours near the Lisbon airport as people whose bodies think it's 3am? [more inside]

Tell me about your home exchange experience
I'm starting to look at home exchanges as an alternative for short vacations and trying to decide a) if it's worth it and b) how the various platforms compare. But as always it's hard to weed out the truly objective information from all the dreck online. I'd love any firsthand wisdom and/or experience. [more inside]
Sicily travel recommendations?
My friend is heading to Sicily in a few days for a 5-day stay. She'll be spending 2 nights in Palermo and 2 in Cefalu with a few other folks and renting a car. (None of them speak Italian.)
Outside of the obvious "10 Top Things You Must Do in Sicily" lists, what should they absolutely not miss? Beaches, hikes, lesser-known sights, local eats, music spots, etc...
I-87 border crossing from Quebec to NY — faster alternatives nearby?
Crossing from Quebec to New York on I-87 at Champlain was an extremely long wait at the end of a holiday last year. I’ll be doing it again this year under similar circumstances. Should I try one of the much smaller crossings nearby, or are they also likely to be extremely busy and potentially worse since they're only 1-2 lanes? I found the USCustoms website that provides wait times at major crossings but there's nothing for the smaller ones I’m curious about. And Google Maps doesn't show traffic info for those smaller roads.
Stroller advice for travelling twins

Travel insurance options for elderly mother travelling to US
My elderly mother (turning 85 in January) is planning to visit my brother in the US next April, for approximately one month. However, a travel insurance estimate from her country of residence, New Zealand, is approximately NZD$2500. I am in Canada and can find a Canadian based insurance options for her for around CAD$800, although this is only for travel to Alberta. Are there any good options for travel to the US that are less than $1000, perhaps from US or international based companies?

What's the most fun way to travel from Seattle to Vancouver?
In early October, me and my partner are spending a week's vacation split between Seattle and Vancouver, flying into one city and flying out of the next. We're trying to figure out what the best, most fun way to get from Seattle to Vancouver might be. Plan A is to rent a car, but we're not familiar with the route, and don't know what the best attractions might be to see along the way. Any recommendations? Also open to other transportation options, as long as we can get it done in one travel day.

How to Plan a Trip: Extended Family Edition

In search of large travel backpack for short person
I’m going on a 2-week international trip in a couple months and I think it would be better to have a large backpack instead of dealing with a wheelie suitcase. Problem is, I’m short (about 5’ tall) and curvy, especially in the hips, and just had a disappointing experience trying out some travel backpacks today. Mefi loves bag questions so I’m hoping you can help. [more inside]
Everything cool in Duluth MN
