Travel Writing Where Stuff Goes Wrong

What are your favorite travelogues, books, stories, magazine articles, anthologies, blogs, whatever, about people having a bad time travelling? (Preferably with an emphasis on bad things of a more humorous nature rather than tragedies or disasters -- think "embarrassing cultural misunderstanding / crummy food / getting lost" rather than "plane crash" maybe?) Also, I prefer 'hapless' to 'smug' but I'll take whatever you got! I love travelling and since I haven't been able to do it lately, I want some stories of people being annoyed or flummoxed so I can be vicariously vexed. Thanks!!

Going on a (very long) road trip. Audibooks and podcasts needed.

My husband and I are going on a road trip of over a month. Need recommendations for audiobooks and/or longform podcasts, especially nonfiction that reads like fiction. It's a broad category but we're thinking biographies, history, international intrigue, true crime, politics, pop culture, Hollywood—and wide open to more suggestions!

Seeking Easy-Reading Classic Literature with a dash of Travel

My partner and I have been reading Hemingway books to each other before bed each night, as we have found them to be the right recipe of enriching literature + easy listening after a long day + a some armchair travel while we're lockdown. Besides Hemingway, which classic books (novels or memoirs) offer this same recipe for a pre-sleep ritual? [more inside]

book about food that must be produced in certain regions of the world

A recent trip to Italy and Spain sparked an interest in foods that must be produced in specific methods and regions of the world in order to be labelled as the particular item. Examples of such foods would be Champagne, Aceto Balsamico di Modena, Prosciutto di Parma, Iberico Ham and Tequila......Can anyone recommend a book that might encompass all or many of the foods that have very specific production regulations to be what they are?

Fiction about non-UK or USA people doing leisure travel

Take me armchair traveling: your favorite works of travel writing?

I won't be able to afford much travel in the next year or two. In the meantime, I'd love to be swept away with rich and vivid descriptions of faraway places. The more introspective, the better. Can be either non-fiction or fiction; essays/short stories or longer format writing; graphic novels are fine; am open to any locations. Bonus points if it also focuses on local food, and/or has an ethnographic approach, and/or is written from a woman's perspective. [more inside]

Riding on planes with books.

Hi! I just got a new job that will have me on about three planes per week (mostly domestic, short-ish flights) for the foreseeable future. Sometimes I will have work to do on these flights, but in general I anticipate a lot of sitting around in airports/airplanes. Since these flights will often happen in the middle of my workday, I can't really default to my usual sky pastime of a Bloody Mary and a nap. Can you suggest your most engaging books for tearing through during travel? I have most recently devoured short story collections by Kurt Vonnegut and George Saunders, as well as a Joan Didion novel, but I really like to read almost everything. I've got an iPad, so things I can download on Kindle would be especially welcome, as would works by lady authors.

9 Year-Old Girl Takes Manhattan

My niece is turning 9 this week and will be visiting Manhattan with her parents over Thanksgiving. I'd like to get her a gift like a coloring book, bingo game, or map where she can track where she's been while she's there. Something that requires a little research on her part beforehand would be great; YA historical stuff or mysteries is sort of what I'm looking for. (She's reading at a 5th grade level). I'd like to steer clear of electronic stuff if possible; paper and crayons/pencils type of thing.
