Description

dhdtrd ltturt @met @twine ISAACv F. DAVIS, vOF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
Lette/rs Patent No. 93,522, dated August 10, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAILLEXIRACTOR.
The Schedule referred to in theseA LettersvPatent and making part ofthe same.
, surface of the wood, to which end certain details of construction are employed, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings- Figure l is a plan View of my invention, and
Figure 2, a side elevation of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe fully its coustruction and method of operation.
A A represent the Shanks, which are pivoted 'together at a, and provided with the handles B B.
Theshank A is provided with the head C, which Serves as a fulcrum and hammer.
Both'shanks A and A have the triangular projections D D, the points of which project beyond the ends of the Shanks and form pincerjaws;
.lhe jaw D is attached tothe shank A', and projects out from the Same suiiiciently far for its head to be flush with the jaw D, which is attached to the shank A.
Both jaws are provided with plane surfaces d d on the inner ends, and maybe constructed of steel, welded to the Shanks, or the whole may be of the same material.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
rlhe jaws are opened far enough for their points to 4grasp the head of the nail, and are pressed down into the wood on each side thereof. Should the wood be hard, or the nail driven unusually deep, it is necessary` to drive the jaws by striking on the surfaces al d, which are provided for the purpose. When the nail is grasped between the pincers, the handles are borne down, forining a lever whose fulcrum is in the head C. A powerful leverage is thus obtained, and the nail is drawn without bending or otherwise injuring the same, as,
when partly drawn it may be released and another hold taken nearer the wood.
This instrumentwill be found particularly adapted to merchants and others who have occasion to open boxes, which can be done without affording material injury to the wood or nails. l
Having thus fully described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The implement described, consisting of the shanks A A', having the jaws D D and head C, when varranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed, this 6th day of May, 1869.
