TONGS FOR SHEET METAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, '1910.
Application filed May 24, 1909. Serial No. 497,994.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. VnIox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warner in the county of Brown and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs for Sheet Metal; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a tool for the use of sheet metal workers in putting on and repairing steel siding and corrugated roofing; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the tool. Fig. 2 is a side view of the tool turned one-quarter around from the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top end view of the tool.
A and B are the handle portions of the tool which are pivoted together by a pin or rivet b. The upper end portions of the handles are crossed. The handle A has a hooked-shaped portion G, and the other handle B has a curved portion D shaped something like the letter S.
E is a curved lever which is pivoted, near one end, by a pin e to the part C a little above the point of the hook. The lever E extends crosswise of the handles above the pin b, and it is provided with a forked claw F on its longer end portion over the handle B. This claw F is used for extracting nails. The shorter end portion of the lever E is provided with a serrated jaw f which projects laterally from its end.
The end of the part D is provided with a serrated jaw g which projects laterally from its end, and which is arranged parallel to and opposite the jaw f. The jaws f and g are used for seizing and bending sheet metal roofing and siding.
H is a crossbar which overlaps the lever E and the part D. This crossbar is pivoted to the lever E above the pin 6 by a pin or rivet h. The lower end portion of the crossbar H is pivoted by a pin 2' to the part D at a point about midway between the pin 7) and the jaw g.

The points of the parts G and D have cutting-edges c and d which form a pair The crossbar H has a laterally projecting portion J on one side, and this projecting portion operates as a stop for the sheet-metal when the sheet-metal is grasped by the jaws or cut by the shears.
Holes 70 and 7c are formed in the laterally projecting portion J and in the part D, and these holes are used for cutting wire and nails. These holes is and 70 may be omitted if desired, and other tools such as a screwdriver M, a nail-set N, &c., can be added to the device, if desired.
,L is a spring between the handles for moving them apart.
What I claim is:
1. The combination, with the crossed and pivoted handles, one handle having a hookshaped portion, and the other handle having a curved portion provided with a laterally projecting jaw at its end, of a lever pivoted near one end to the said hook-shaped portion and provided at its shorter end with a laterally projecting jaw arranged opposite the aforesaid jaw, and a crossbar pivoted to the longer end portion of the said lever and to the said curved portion between its pivot and jaw.
2. The combination, with the crossed and pivoted handles, one handle havin a hookshaped portion, and the other hand e having a curved portion provided with a laterally projecting jaw at its end, of a lever pivoted near one end to the said hook-shaped portion and provided at its shorter end with a laterally projecting jaw arranged opposite the aforesaid jaw, and a crossbar pivoted to the longer end portion of the said lever and to the said curved portion between its pivot and jaw, said crossbar having a projecting side portion which forms a stop for the material grasped between the said jaws.
