IMPROVEIEENT IN COMBINED HAMMER AND NAIL-HOLDER.

To all whom it mayhcmwer-n Be it known that I, RANsoM W. Gnnnmof Bradford, in the county of McKean, and State otlPennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and improved Combined Hammer and `Nail-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a frh-clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the ait to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

l rlhis invention relates to improvements in combined hammers and nail-holders, the object of which is to provide a more convenient nail-holding device.

It consists of the arrangement on the handle, near the hammer, of a fixed and a sliding clamping-jaw, thelatter being provided with a spring, for causing it toclarnp the nail, and a thumb-piece for retiacting it.

It is connected to the handle by a bent strip of sheetmetal, wherein it slides back and forth, for clamping or releasing thenail.

The drawing represents a side view of a hammer having my improved nail-holding clamp combined therewith.

A represents the fixed jaw of the clamp, having an elongated shank, B, by which it is secured to the handle, and which serves as a slide for the movable jaw C, which also has an elongated shank, arranged to sli-de on the shank B, within a case of sheet-metal, D, bent around both Shanks of the jaws, and secured to the handle, as representedin the drawing, by tacks or screws.

The shank of the jaw O is provided with a thumbpiece, E, by which it may be retracted by the fore linger ot' the hand in which the handle is held.

It is also provided with a spring, F, for forcingl it back, and holding it against the nail.

In some cases, I, propose to form the end'- of the shank into a bow-spring, as represented in red, and secure the end of the latter to the handle.

By thisarrangement, the sprin0r serves as the thumbpiece for the shank of the jaw Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The jaws A and O, secured to the hammer-handle by the plate D, constructed and arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
