Description

ltnted glatte ll-,latent @Mitica Letters Patent No. 91,392, dated .Tune 15, 1869.
IMPRQVED CARPET-STRETCEER .AND NAILER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELoNzo S. WHEELER, of Westport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connec` tient, have `invented a new Improvement in Carpet- Stretcher and Nailer; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken'in connection with the accompanying drawings, andthe letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front view,
Figure 2, a side view,
Figure 3, a sectional view of the end of the hammerspindle; and in Figure 4, the operation of the instrument.
This invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for stretching and nailing carpets; and
The invention consists in combining, with a forklever, a hammer-spindle, constructed so as to grasp and hold the tack. i
The prongs of the fork passing through the carpet, strike the door as a fulcrum, so that by forcing the lever forward, the carpet is stretched, and, when so stretched, the tack held by the han'nner-spindle is driven into the floor, through the carpet, the grasping-device releasing the tack when so driven.
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying' drawings.
A is a bar or lever, terminating in two prongs, B B,
l asseen in figs. 1 and 2, the said llever provided with a handle, C, arranged in a convenient position for working the lever.
Upon the lever is arranged spindle, D, sliding freely in bearings a, andv held up, by a spiral spring around the spindle, as seen in figs. 1 and 2, so that when the spindle is driven down by a blow upon the head E, the spring will force it back after the blow.
The lower end of the spindle is provided with apair of spring-clasps, j, so as to grasp and hold the tack placed between the two clasps, as seen in iig. 3.
This instrument is especially designed for carpettacks covered with a sheet-metal head, which are always of the same size and form.
The opelation of the instrument is as follows:
Stick the prongs B B through the carpet where it is desired to drive the tack, and inclining the lever s0 as to set the prongs into the floor, at the point where the nail is to be driven, having first fixed the tack in the hammenspindle; then, the iioor serving as a fulcrum, raise the lever to a perpendicular position, as denoted in red, iig. 4, and strike the spindle with the hand, or with an instrument, with suiicieni;I force to drive'the tack through the carpet into the flbor, and when so driven, the spring will force the spindle npward, and the instrument will be set for driving a second tack, and soon.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lever A, combined with the spindle D, the lever arranged for stretching the carpet, and the spindle, provided with a. clasping-device to hold the tack, the whole constructed and arranged to operate in the manner herein set forth. V
ELONZO S. WHEELER.
