UlhltTE STATES MICHAEL LIGUORI, 0F WHITEHALL, NEW YORK.
LADY S HAIR COMB.
! Application filed. January 2, 1925.
To all 1.0720712, it may concern:
Be it known that 1', MICHAEL LIcUonI, a subject oi the King of Italy, residing at hitehall, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Ladies Hair Combs, or which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to hair combs, the invention having more particular reference to a pocket comb, or small comb that may be reaoily carried around in a purse or vanity bag, for ladies use.
The invention has {or an object the provision of a novel comb of this sort provided with a sheathing which forms the handle of the comb when the latter is in use.
F or further comprehension oi: the invention, and ot the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the tollowingdescription and accon'ipanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
- Fig. 1 of the drawing is a longitudinal view of the comb as extended for use, the sheathing being shown in section and the comb in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an edge View.
Fig. 41 is a part Side view, with parts broken away showing the comb as drawn back into the sheath.
Fig. 5 is an end view.
In constructing my improved comb I proride a sheathing or casing which is of a suitable cross section to have the comb fit snugly therein, this sheathing having one end closed as at 10 and the other end open. The comb is shown at 12, and comprises a backing element from which the usual teeth 12 are projected. This backing element is extended longitudinally of the comb, at the end of the latter that is inserted in the sheathing 10, as at 12. Outward movement of the comb from the sheathing may be prevented by turning the bottom ends of the sheathing side walls as at 14 over the shoulder 15 formed at the point where the teeth of the comb unite with this extended backing element 12.
Located within the sheathing 10 is a coiled tension spring 18 that is attached at one end to the end 10 ot the sheathing and at its other end to the comb 12 and which Serial No. 39.
serves to draw the comb back into the sheathing. The comb 12 is retained in position for use, that isto say with the teeth projected from the sheathing and the backing extension 12 engaged in the open end of said sheathing, by means of a latch 20 that is pivoted to lugs 21 formed on the sheathing and engages 'at one end in a keeper-notch 22 in the rear'edge' of the backing of the comb. The latch is formed with a finger piece extension 20 by pressure upon which it is released, and is retained in operative position by means of a flat spring 23 that is fixed at one end to the extension 20 and bears at its other end on the said rear edge of the comb, a longitudinal slot 24; being formed in the sheathing 10 to receive the latch nose and the spring 23. As clearly shown in Fig. 2 ot' the drawing the latch nose is narrower than the spring 23, while the keeper-notch 22 is of just sutficient width to receive this nose, so that when the latch 20 is moved to release the comb, the spring 23 bearing on the back of the comb, rides freely over the said notch, this spring serving as a friction brake or regulator to prevent the comb from snapping too quickly back into the sheathing when released. Mounted slidably in the end of the sheathing 10 and projecting longitudinally into the latter is a plunger pin 25 which may be pressed against the inner end of the comb, when latter is to be projected from the sheathing to project the comb slightly forward to be grasped by the fingers, the comb being then pulled out-ward until the latch LO engages in the keeper notch 22. In this position the comb is ready for use, the sheathing serving as a handle for the comb.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A pocket comb comprising a comb proper, a sheathing in which said comb proper is slidably mounted, a tension spring in said sheathing urging said comb inward in the sheathing, and a movable latch engaging said comb to retain the same projected to operative position, and a plunger pin slidable in the end of the sheathing toengage the said comb and project it slightly at one end from'thc sheathing.
2. A pocket comb comprising a comb proper, a sheathing in which said comb proper is slidably mounted, a tension spring in said sheathing connected at opposite ends respectively to one end of the I sheathing and one end of the comb, said comb having a narrow keeper notch in the back'thereof, a latch engaging in said notch to hold the comb projected to operative position, a 'finger piece on .said latch, a spring fixed to said finger piece and bearing on the said comb to retain the said latch engaged with the said notch, said spring being wider than'the said notch to ride freely over the latter.
3. A pocket 'comb comprising a comb proper, a sheathing in which said comb proper is slidably mounted, a tension spring in said sheathing connected at opposite ends respectively to one end of the sheathing and one end of the comb, said comb having a narrow keeper notch in the back thereof, a latch engagingin said notch to hold the comb'projected to operative position, a finger piece on said latch, a. spring fixed to said finger piece and bearing on the said MICHAEL LIGUORI.
