2 Claims.
This invention relates to a nail file.
Among the objects of the invention are: To provide for combining a handle and nail file in such a manner that the handle will support the file for use, in a more advantageous manner; to provide for mounting the file upon the. handle in a properly exposed condition for use'and yet at the same time furnish a secure connection between the file and the handle so that the latter may advantageously be utilized; and to provide for convenient attachment of the file to, and removal thereof from, the handle while still maintaining asecurely attached relation of the file to the handle whenever it is desired to use ing the file in its mounted position upon the main elongated recess IS, the back part of the 7 comb having an intact (as viewed from the side) part i8 'at one end of said recess l5, beyond which an auxiliary, smaller recess i1 is provided.
The part I6 is not intact as viewed in cross section, but is provided with a longitudinal groove or slit l9 which extends from end to end thereof. There is also provided, along the bottom of the recess IS, a groove 2| and at the end of said recess opposite to the part to a narrow groove 23, the grooves I9 and 23 being continuations of the main groove 2i.
The aforesaid grooves are properly dimensioned and positioned to have fitted into them one of the long edge portions of a nail file 25, the groove or slit 23 serving to receive the blunt end of said file while the pointed part 26 of the file projects out into the recess ll.
The blunt end portion of the file is beveled somewhat, as shown in the drawing, and is provided with a series of ratchet-like teeth 2'! which are arranged with their short sides directed upwardly, so that when the comb is crowded down into its seated position these teeth bite into the adjacent end portion of the narrow recess or groove 23, thereby preventing this end portion of the file from slipping out of place. The opposite end portion of the file is shown having an angular recess 29, provision thus being made for the formation on the file of a minute tooth 30 which engages a shoulder it formed in the comb, to hold in place the pointed end of the file.
When the file is attached to the comb both its point portion and its body portion may be advantageously used in cleaning and filing the nails, nothwithstanding the fact-that the recessed portion W of the combs back guards against the point of the file catching in or tearing the clothing of the user.
. The material in the combs back at each side of the recesses or slits i9 and 23 extends up to the outer edge of the inserted file and grips the latter in such a manner as to prevent it from being given an undesirable rocking or vibrating movement when the comb is utilized as a handle means for the operation of the file. Furthermore, the blunt end portion of the inserted file forms a smooth continuation of the adjacent portion of the combs back.
The comb; after being equipped with the nail file, may be used as conveniently as before for the usual purpose.
The scope of the claimed invention includes using for an elongated handle member other articles than combs, or providing, in place of the comb, a handle member that functions only as such; and in any case the handle member may be molded around the toothed end portions of the file at the time the device is manufactured, rather than the file being forced into its'seated position after the handle member has been completely formed.
I claim:-
1. A handle member of an'elongated flat character having a main recess extending along an a spaced relation to one of the ends of said main I recess, thereby providing as seen from the side 2 memes the mid-width of said intact portion; and a nail clothing by the parts 01 the handle adjacent to file of the elongated fiat type fitted within said said auxiliary recess.
groove, 2. portion of the faces of said file being 2. The subject matter of claim 1 and, the outer exposed for use by reason of said main recess, said edge portion of said file being in a substantially file having a point which projects into said aux- 5. streamline relation to the parts of the handle iliary recess in a sufilciently exposed position for adjacent to the ends of said main recess.
use and is guarded against contact with the L F, SRHEH.
