Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the high purity title compound, useful as a photographic developer etc., in high yield, by the reaction of p-isopropenylphenol, a solvent, a strong acid and an oxidizing agent at a specific reaction temp. followed by aging, thereby enabling the control of the oxidation temp.
CONSTITUTION: (A)p-Isopropenylphenol solution treated with a high b.p. polar solvent hardly soluble in water, e.g. octanol, (B) a strong acid, e.g. sulfuric acid, and (C) H2O2 or an organic peroxide as an oxidizing agent, are fed to an oxidation reactor kept at ≥25°C, and the oxidation is carried out at 28W50°C. The reaction product is aged at 30W50°C to complete the decomposition of the (A) component to hydroquinone and acetone. The reaction can be carried out continuously without interruption at an oxidation yield of as high as ≥90%.
