Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain terephthalic acid (T) in high yield according to an industrially practicable continuous process, by oxidizing a reaction mother liquor after separation of crude T prepared through high-temperature oxidation of p-tolualdehyde in the presence of Br-, at a high temperature, and by reusing the oxidized liquor.
CONSTITUTION: p-Tolualdehyde is oxidized with an O2-containing gas in water solvent in the presence of Br- at 180W280°C to give terephthalic acid (T). The amount of Br- is 0.5W12 wt.% based on the solvent, and 2 times or more, preferably 3W6 times that of the starting material. T is then separated by centrifugation, and the reaction mother liquor is oxidized with an O2-containing gas at 280W 370°C to remore very small amounts of inhibitory substances and reused as a reaction solvent containing the catalyst.
