Abstract
961,324. Blasting charges. DOW CHEMICAL CO. April 13, 1961 [Aug. 11, 1960], No. 13370/61. Heading F3A. [Also in Division E1] A method of blasting comprises embedding a series of shaped charges 1 in an explosive load 2 in such a manner that the axis of symmetry of each charge and the longitudinal axis of the explosive are coincident. Preferably, all but the bottom charge face downwards and the distance between two adjacent charges may vary from 0.3 to 3.6 metres. Also one or both of the end charges may be placed outside the explosive load, in contact therewith or slightly spaced therefrom. To facilitate alignment of the charges they may be contained in a tube, preferably of light metal, which is placed within the explosive. The method preferably uses low explosives such as those whose principal component is ammonium nitrate or ammonium nitrate with one or more of ammonia, water, fuel oil or a light metal. An example given is of an explosive mix in which particulated aluminium and magnesium forms 40% by weight of the mix, the remainder being an ammoniacal solution of ammonium nitrate. Specification 881,694 is referred to.
