Abstract
A slurried blasting explosive composition, resistant to segregation of its ingredients during storage, comprises an inorganic oxygen-supplying salt, a particulate organic explosive, a gel-forming or thickening polysaccharide, finely divided aluminium or an alloy thereof, water, and a metal chromate which is either sodium or potassium dichromate in an amount of 0.01 to 0.1% by weight or zinc or barium chromate in an amount of 0.1 to 2% by weight. The oxygen-supplying salt may be ammonium, sodium, barium, potassium, or calcium nitrate, or a mixture thereof. Organic explosives referred to are TNT, PETN, tetryl, RDX, pentolite, Composition B, smokeless powder, and mixtures thereof. The polysaccharide is preferably a mannogalactan, for example guar gum or carob seed gum, and may be mixed with ethylene glycol or glycerine. The chromate acts as a cross-linking agent on the polysaccharide, and its action may be delayed by addition of a small amount of a metal oxalate or citrate, oxalic acid, citric acid, tarteric acid. or gluconic acid. Specifications 869,155 and 1,002,672 are referred to. Canadian Specification 617,006 also is referred to.
