Abstract
Crude Thomas iron containing more than 0.40 per cent. silicon is treated before introduction into a Thomas converter with a gaseous reagent and a pulverized oxygen- or carbon dioxide-containing substance to reduce the silicon to not less than 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. without the temperature rising higher than that obtained in a normal blow during the removal of silicon. The process may be carried out in a ladle, mixer, or converter. The gaseous reagent may be oxygen and water-vapour or oxygen and nitrogen in which the oxygen is less than is present in atmospheric air, and the pulverized reagents may be iron oxide, limestone, or soda.
