Abstract
Steel is refined by surface blowing oxygen from a lance, the melt being stirred when oxygen blowing is stopped for intermediate or final deslagging by blowing a gas containing less than 35% oxygen into the melt. The oxygen may be loaded with dephosphorizing agents, as may the gas, which can be nitrogen, argon, carbon monoxide, air or air enriched with oxygen with or without steam and/or carbon dioxide. Blowing the gas may take 1-4 minutes, the lance used for blowing oxygen being suitable therefor. The process is applicable to rotary furnaces and to conventional bottom blown converters. The feed of dephosphorizing material in the oxygen may be increased during the 2-3 minutes immediately before the cessation of oxygen blowing.
