Abstract

In an open-hearth process for production of steel, the silicon content of the pig-iron to be introduced into the furnace is reduced by a pre-treatment comprising introducing a blast either of oxygen, or containing more oxygen than does air, into the molten pig-iron with formation of an acid slag before introducing the pig-iron into the open-hearth furnace. The refining in the furnace may also be carried out using a blast of oxygen or containing more oxygen than does air. Pre-treatment in a ladle p with an oxygen-air mixture containing 72 per cent. oxygen is described.
