618,441. Two-stroke engines. FARKAS, P. May 7, 1946, No. 13840. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1940. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine a long expansion stroke is produced by delaying the commencement of the exhaust period, which extends from OE, to FE, and the work of compression in the cylinder is reduced by arranging the admission period to extend from OA to FA, i.e. until the last half of the compression stroke. In Fig. 6 exhaust ports 9 are opened by a rotary sleeve valve 7 and closed by the piston, and admission is controlled by a poppet valve 2, but modifications are described in some of which the valve reciprocates or has both oscillatory or reciprocatory movements, and in which it has further ports controlling the admission. In others, poppet valves are used for both inlet and exhaust, and in one, rich mixture is blown into the cylinder past a poppet valve in addition to air. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a piston head and combustion chamber insulated with asbestos protected by metal plates.
