Abstract

451,888. Four-stroke engines ; valves &c. HANSEN, P., 3, Svejgaardsvej, Hellerup, near Copenhagen. July 18, 1935, No. 20436. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1934. [Class 7 (vi)] In four - stroke engines, particularly Diesel engines, in which compressed air is admitted either during the latter part of the suction stroke for supercharging, or during the end of the exhaust and the beginning of the suction stroke for scavenging, or in which both these methods are adopted, the admission of both compressed and atmospheric air to the cylinder inlet valve is controlled by a rotary, piston, or other valve which is actuated by the same mechanism as the cylinder inlet valve. Fig. 1 shows a cylinder 1 fitted with inlet valve 2, the admission to which of compressed air from a pipe 16<c> and atmospheric air through a filter 17b is controlled by a rotary valve 11 actuated by linkage 5, 7, 9 from the lever 3 actuating the valve 2. A rod 3a connected to the lever 3 is actuated by a cam or eccentric. The rotary valve 11 is formed with two series of ports 14, 15, Fig. 3, controlling respectively the compressed air supplied to a chamber 16, and atmospheric air admitted to a chamber 17, and the ports 14, 15 are so arranged that, as the valve is oscillated from its closed position, it first admits compressed air through the ports 14 for scavenging and then atmospheric air through the ports 15, and as the valve returns to the closed position, the ports 14 again open to admit supercharging air.
