[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine, inlet ports e are controlled by the piston only, while further inlet ports e<1> are controlled by both the piston and a slide valve s, which also in conjunction with the piston controls exhaust ports a. The valve is slotted at r so as to slide over internal projections h on the cylinder, which bring the ports e against the piston. The exhaust ports a are substantially radial, but the inlet ports e, e<1> are directed towards a point M opposite the exhaust ports, and may also be oblique in relation to the cylinder head. The main inlets e are lower than the subsidiary inlets e<1>, and the former may serve chiefly for scavenging-air, and the latter for the air, gas, or mixture charge.
