Abstract

496,482. Illuminated signs. NOORDEN, J. W. VAN. April 28, 1937, No. 12099. [Class 3 (ii)] An imitation neon sign comprises a front glass plate 1, Fig. 1, on which a character is formed by an opaque coating 2 having a reflecting backing 3, a plate 4 having an opaque reflecting layer 5 with an uncovered portion 6 of the same shape as the coating 2 and arranged symmetrically behind the coating 2, and a plate 8 provided with a translucent coating 9. Light passing through the portion 6 is reflected on to the coating 5 and directed forwardly by this to produce an aureola effect around the character 2. The plates 1, 4, 8 may be replaced by a single plate having the coatings 2, 3 on its front face and the remainder on its rear face. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the character is formed by an opaque coating 16 on a plate 11, arranged symmetrically behind an uncovered portion 15 of corresponding shape in an opaque layer 13 on a plate 10, the layer 13 having a reflecting backing 14 by which light is directed on to the borders of the coating 16. The signs may be illuminated by lamps at the rear or at the sides of the plates. Specification 414,216 is referred to.
