[Class 3 (ii).] A sign facia comprises characters formed partly of transparent or translucent material for transmitting light from a rear source of artificial illumination, and partly of bright, ribbed material adapted to reflect light incident on the front of the sign. As shown, the facia comprises a front glass plate a which is rendered relatively opaque except for the character, which is left transparent or translucent and may be defined by a painted border f. Behind this is an opal diffusing sheet e, and between the two sheets is a cut-out stencil c of the ribbed reflecting material, the cut-out spaces b of which are narrower than the characters formed on the plate a so that the effect of a bright reflecting margin is obtained. Alternatively, the spaces b may be filled with the reflecting material, the margins being left translucent. In order to obtain colour effects which are different for transmitted and reflected light, the sheet e may be coloured throughout but provided on its front surface with an opal reflecting layer of a different colour; the same effect could be obtained by the use of a rear coloured coating on the plate e, or of a second plate located behind it. The plates a, c and e are preferably united at their edges to form a compact unit.
