[Classes 19 and 61 (i).] In a brush in which the bristle holder C, Fig. 1, with a stud C<1> is retracted into a hollow handle A provided with a slotted sleeve B and a quick helical thread A<1>, a cap or nut D is provided at the lower end attached to the sleeve B and threaded with a quick pitch to the handle A. Due to the difference in pitch, the bristle head can be fully projected or retracted by not more than a complete turn. A locking effect is produced by forcing the pin C<1> against the upper end of the groove A<1>. An increased effect may be provided by an inclined offset B<2>, Fig. 5, at the upper end of the slot B<1> in the sleeve B. The cap or nut D may be fixed to the sleeve B by a pin, but preferably, an adjustable coupling is made. A boss B<3> is furnished with notches B<4> and a ball G, Fig. 1, can be inserted in any one notch to engage a corresponding notch in D<3> in the cap. A stud H with an enlarged head holds the ball Clocked. In a modification, Fig. 10, the head C is made conical to fit a conical part A<4> on the handle.
