Abstract
394,090. Linear-dimension gauges. SIMMONDS, J. E. and PETERSON, C., 26, Hatton Wall, London. March 18, 1932, No. 8095. [Class 106 (ii).] An alignment gauge for vehicle wheels comprises a main tube 1 having a telescopic member 4 pressed outwards by spring pressure, a longitudinal slot 2 in the main tube, a fixed indicator or scale 3 adjacent the slot and acting in conjunction with a pointer, and pins or studs 7, 7a at the ends of the device for engagement against the inside of the wheels or tyres. The slot 2 extends a little way from one end of the tube 1 and in the other end are formed a series of holes 1a in line. On the outer end of the tube 4 is fixed a bracket 6 carrying a pin or stud 7 parallel to but eccentric to the tube 4. In a modification, the bracket is slotted and the pin adjustable therein. In the tube 4 is a longitudinal slot 9 in which a pointer 10a is guided. When the tube 4 is pushed in the slot 9 coincides with the slot 2 and the pointer 10a can be slid along the main slot 2. The tubes cannot rotate relatively and a stop prevents the tube 4 moving out of the main tube. The other end of the main tube is provided with an open-ended tube 11 having a spring- pressed stud 12 to engage any of the holes 1a, and in this tube are formed a line of holes 11a into any of which a spring stud 13a on an inner rod or tube 13 takes. To the end of this inner tube 13 is secured a bracket 6a and stud 7a. To use the device, the spring pins 12, 13a are adjusted so that the device is longer than the distance between the tyres and the tube 4 is pushed in until the studs 7, 7a abut against the inside walls of the tyres with the ends of the depending chains 8, 8a just touching the ground. The pointer 10a is then moved to register with the arm 3a. The wheels are then moved forward to allow the device to engage the rear of the wheels when the pointer indicates the amount of " Toe in " or " Toe out."
