Abstract

283,277. Watson, M. B. Oct. 7, 1926. Linear-dimension gauges.-An aligning device for gauging the inner edges of the rims of a pair of motor vehicle wheels comprises telescopic members, legs for supporting them at a suitable height, gauge arms extending from the outer or free ends of the members, an indicating member pivoted to one of the gauge arms, means urging this member in one direction, and a fixed index or scale for the indicating member. Two members 1, 2 are arranged to telescope one within the other. The member 1 comprises a flat rod with ratchet teeth the pitch of which correspond to the graduations which represent whole units of measurement while the member 2 comprises a tube of oval section. A pawl pivoted to the member 2 is adapted to engage the teeth on the member 1. Secured to the outer end of each member is a bifurcated head-piece 6 between the limbs of which a gauge arm 7 is pivoted on a pin 8 passing freely through holes in the limbs. Each pin 8 carries keyed to it a pair of legs 9 and a wing nut 11 holds the parts in assembled position. A projection 12 on each leg 9 coacts with a stop 13 on the head piece 6 to determine the operative position of the legs and a faced stop 14 on each gauge arm coacts similarly with a faced abutment 15 on the head piece to determine the correct operative position of the arm. By slackening the wing nut 8 the legs and arms may be folded beneath the members 1 and 2 for transport or storage. One gauge arm is adapted to contact directly with a wheel rim while the other carries a spring pressed indicating lever 17, 17a pivotally carried at the end of the arm one end 17 of the lever engaging the wheel rim while the other end moves over a scale 18 carried on the adjacent head piece. In a modified construction, each gauge arm is made in two parts one of which is mounted as before and carries a pin engaging a slot in the other part which may be adjusted vertically. The scale and indicating lever are carried by the adjustable part. This enables the measurement to be taken at axle height irrespective of the size of wheel. For wide tracks a bifurcated graduated extension member is secured to the member 1.
