Abstract
1346676 Foamable synthetic resins ROHM GmbH 10 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 42402/71 Headings C3C and C3P Synthetic resin compositions which are capable, when heated to 150-250‹ C., of forming a foam containing acrylimide or methacrylimide units comprise (a) a polymer of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and, if desired, a C 1-4 alkyl ester thereof, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide and/or methacrylamide, and/or, if desired, at least one further comonomer, the polymer containing up to 20% by weight of units of said further comonomer(s); (b) formic acid as a blowing agent; and, when necessary, (c) formamide, monomethylformamide, urea and/or N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethylurea as further blowing agent, the monomer composition of the polymer of component (a) and the amount of component (c) incorporated in the said resin compositions being such that the sum of the equivalents of amide nitrogen in the said resin compositions is equal to, or differs by not more than 5% from, half the sum of the equivalents (i) carboxy group-containing monomer units in excess over any nitrile groupcontaining monomer units which may be present in the polymer; (ii) C 1-4 alkyl ester group-containing monomer units forming imide groups upon foaming of the resin compositions; and (iii) amide group-containing monomer units. The further comonomer units may be of maleic, itaconic or fumaric acid. The polymerization of said monomers may be performed by bulk polymerization using initiators such as benzoyl peroxide plus t-butyl perpivalate. A mercapto compound such as pentaerythritol tetrathioglycolate may also be present. The foamable resin compositions may also contain fire retardants, e.g. a phosphorus containing compound, a halogenated styrene or a halophenyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, dyes, pigments and fillers. The examples refer to copolymers prepared from: methacrylonitrile and methacrylic acid (3); methacrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate (1, 2, 4); and methacrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate with either methacrylamide (5), acrylonitrile (6) or maleic anhydride (7-10).
