Abstract

1,141,764. Foamable thermoplastic synthetic resins. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. 31 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 35159/67. Addition to 1,045,229. Headings C3C and C3P. Thermoplastic synthetic resins which are capable of foaming when subjected to the action of heat are prepared by copolymerizing (A) a nitrile and/or amide of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, (B) acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, and if desired (C) at least one further copolymerizable monomer, the copolymerization being effected in the presence of urea or N.N<SP>1</SP>- dimethylurea and in the presence of 0.5-10% by weight (based on the monomers A, B and C) of a polymer soluble in the monomer mixture and containing at least 10% by weight of units of the formula wherein R is H or alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or methyl and X is -O-, phenylene, -CO-O-alkylene -O- or -CO-O-alkylene; the proportions of monomers A, B and C and of the urea compound being as defined in Specification 1,045,229. Specified as monomer component (C) are styrene, vinyl acetate, methyl or butyl methacrylate, itaconic acid and its esters, amide and nitrile, vinyl pyridines and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. The copolymerization mixture may also contain other natural or synthetic macromolecular components, plasticizers, flame-retardants, fillers or reinforcing agents. A solvent may be utilized to assist dissolving the urea compound in the monomers. Benzoyl peroxide is exemplified as polymerization catalyst. Foamed synthetic resins may be prepared by heating the copolymer products, preferably in granular form, to above 180‹ C. The urea compound acts as a blowing agent and also enters into reaction with the copolymer to form cyclic imide groups.
