Abstract

1,183,152. Foamable methacrylic acidmethacrylonitrile resins. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b.H. 19 Sept., 1968 [19 Sept., 1967], No. 44673/68. Addition to 1,045,229. Headings C3C and C3P. A foamable synthetic resin comprises (A) a copolymer of (1) methacrylic acid; (2) methacrylonitrile; and, if desired, (3) at least one further copolymerizable monomer the proportions of components (1), (2) and (3) being more than 60% and not greater than 90% by weight, from 10% to less than 40%, and less than 30%, respectively, of the total weight of monomers], (B) 5 to 20%, based on the weight of copolymer (A), of urea or N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl urea and, if desired, (C) up to 10% of water based on the total weight of the resin. Components (B) and (C) are incorporated during formation of copolymer component (A). Other components e.g. silica aerogel, asbestos powder or a polymer soluble in the monomer mixture may also be present during formation of said copolymer. Specified comonomers (3) are (meth) acrylamide, acrylic acid, a (meth) acrylate ester, acrylonitrile, methyleneglutaronitrile, styrenes, vinyl esters and heterocyclic vinyl compounds e.g. vinyl carbazole, vinyl imidazole and vinyl pyrrolidone. In the examples copolymers are produced by heating in two stages a mixture comprising methacrylic acid, methacrylonitrile, polyvinyl butyral, urea, benzoyl peroxide and, additionally, water (Example 3) or methyl methacrylate (Example 4). The copolymers are foamed by heating.
