Abstract

Heat foamable thermoplastic copolymers of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid nitrile and/or amide (A) acrylic and/or methacrylic acid (B), and an optional monomer (C). The copolymer has good thermostability and solvent resistance, and comprises 20-60% (A), 10-60% (B), and optionally, 60% (C). Polymerisation is accomplished in the presence of dissolved 3-20% by weight urea or N,N'-dimethylurea. The granular product is foamed by heating to form cyclic acrylic or methacrylic imide groups. Suitable monomers (C) are styrene, vinyl acetate, butyl methacrylate, itaconic acid, vinyl pyridines, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. Plasticisers, flame retardants, fillers, and reinforcements may be added.
