Abstract

A sealed Li-I cell comprises (a) an anode of Li, Lis as amalgam and Li in non aq. electrolyte, (b) a cathode of I or I with an ionic conductivity enhancing material and (c) a solid Li-Na aluminate electrolyte having an approx. compsn. of LiNaO. 9Al2O3 with 1.3-85.0 (40-60) esp. 50% total alkali ion content being Li, between anode and cathode, the anode, cathode and electrolyte being within a casing. The cell has a high cell voltage of about 3.6V, high energy density, near zero self-discharge rate and may be used as a secondary cell.
