Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable a long discharge to be carried out with a small current by using a mixture of thiophene and iodine as a positive active material for a lithium- iodine solid electrolyte battery. CONSTITUTION:A positive active material for a lithium-iodine solid electrolyte battery is prepared by adding iodine to thiophene, subjecting the mixture to exothermic reaction by stirring to obtain a soft clod, and crushing the soft clod. A positive electrode 3 is formed by using thus prepared positive active material. A battery is constituted by the combination of the positive electrode 3, a lithium 1 used as a negative electrode, and a lithium iodide 2 which works as a solid electrolyte and is developed by the chemical reaction between the positive and the negative electrodes 3 and 1. Owing to the above constitution, the contact of the former lithium with the mixture powder consisting of thiophene and iodine develops lithium iodide, which works as the electrolyte of the battery, in the interface through chemical reaction. Consequently, any defect such as the corrosin of the former iodine can be prevented, and the low-rate discharge characteristic of the battery can be greatly enhanced.
