Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Greatly amused with all the anger and hatred directed at Tim Tebow and the Jacksonville Jaguars for signing him as a tight end. Why they did it is clear - Tebow remains very popular and can sell tickets for the Jags. Since his signing Tebow actually has the top selling jersey in the NFL - more jerseys sold than either Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady. Not bad for a guy lucky to take the last roster spot on the team...  Heh Heh... Speaking of Tom Brady - he actually has more career rushing TD's (25) than running back teammate Leonard Fournette (23). Just find that interesting... I hope the young people who voted for Joe Biden because they believed his pledge to cancel their student debt have learned an important life lesson about trusting a politician (but I'm not holding my breath)... It may be just me but I really don't miss the days when it seemed like Bono from U2 was either called on to comment or felt the need to speak up on seemingly every socio-political issue of the day. He's kind of faded into the woodwork which is fine with me... Would love to see the New England Patriots trade for Julio Jones. Wonder if an offer of a second round pick along with receiver N'Keal Harry would be enough to get it done?...

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen would have turned 83-years old today. I think may people associate Cohen with the song Hallelujah (especially maybe with the  Jeff Buckley version). I always first think of this collaboration with U2;

Today would be a good day to revisit this 2016 New Yorker profile of Cohen.

100 of My Favorite Songs

Today's offering (9) I Threw a Brick Threw a Window by U2. One of their more forgotten songs.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

As we embark on the new NFL season - consider that Alex Smith of the Chiefs is now a higher paid NFL QB than Tom Brady. Yeah - I know... Laniakea - we are so very, very small... If I were to have a one-man acoustic band that only played U2 cover songs - I'd name the band Mono... Is it interesting or ironic that some bars chill shots of Fireball?... Very cool. I hate being a pincushion... I wonder if the characters of Mayor McCheese and the Hamburglar were loosely based on Billy and Whitey Bulger...

U2 - I Threw a Brick Through a Window

Another lost classic. This song was from 1982 but if it came out today it would be a big hit. Classic guitar from the Edge.

This Picture - Naked Rain

Naked Rain by This Picture is a forgotten classic (can things from 1991 now be termed classic?).

A great song that you never hear anymore. Most people who hear it for the first time think it is some sort of U2 b-side.

The Fly - U2

You don't seem to hear U2 as much these days. Haven't heard this song in quite some time. It holds up very well.

U2 - Bad (Live Aid 1985)

Hard to believe that its been almost 27 years since Live Aid. This song stops me in my tracks whenever I hear it. Funny to see Bono rocking a mullet.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Kerry Collins replacing Peyton Manning is like Jack Black replacing Bono as lead singer for U2. That concert just isn't going to be the same... Who knew? Monarch butterflies are poisonous. Not so much to humans but they do have a poisonous defense against smaller predators like frogs, birds and mice... Sorry about the passing of actor Cliff Robertson. Interesting fact from his Wikipedia page - supposedly Robertson was a pilot who was flying a small craft the morning of September 11, 2001. According to the Wikipedia page Robertson was flying directly over the Twin Towers when the first plane struck... So after the Texans killed the Colts yesterday - I'd expect record numbers of people in NFL knock-out pools will be taking the Browns next week (they play Indy)... I could see going to a baseball game with a glove but I think you must have "issues" if you go to an NFL game wearing shoulder pads... Suzy Kolber's Mancave would be a good name for a fantasy football team... It is now been 10-years since 9/11 and I think commercial pilots still don't have the right to carry a firearm in the cockpit.

U2 - Numb

Numb by U2 is not really played that often on the radio. It is a fun song but pretty much forgotten because Bono doesn't sing it.

Red Sox Magic Number - 84

With the 4-0 win over the Orioles last night - the Red Sox magic number is now 84.

I wanted to comment that 84 was the year U2 released the CD The Unforgettable Fire which featured the song Bad. I am reminded of this because earlier today I bought the CD at CVS for $9.99. I was at CVS so that my daughter could buy a musical birthday card and I happened to see the CD for sale. Impulse sale.

In 1983 the Orioles won the World Series and it seems like to me that they have been "Bad" ever since. The decline of "the Oriole Way" in my mind started in 84 and by 86 they were in last place - just like today.

I haven't mentioned the death of Michael Jackson mostly because I wasn't a fan. I was New Wave - what's now called First Wave - not Pop. More Joe Strummer than Michael Moonwalker. I do want to say that for my money U2's Bad kicked Michale Jackson's Bad's ass.

Leonard Cohen

Happy 74th birthday to the vastly under-rated singer songwriter.
