Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"But you know as well as I, patriotism is a word; and one that generally comes to mean either my country, right or wrong, which is infamous, or my country is always right, which is imbecile." - Patrick O'Brien

"We must reject the ideas that every time a law is broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions." - Ronald Reagan

"History is written by the winners... except on Wikipedia." - Elon Musk

"A winner is someone who recognizes his God given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals." - Larry Bird

Jeffrey Epstein

This was my favorite reaction to the "suicide" of Jeffrey Epstein.

My initial thoughts to the news was to think of the scene in LA Confidential where they find Pierce Patchett dead from an apparent suicide. The Russell Crowe character Bud White remarks along the lines of, "Wasn't his idea [to cut his wrists], his fingers were broken."

Many conspiracy theorists will point to the Clinton's as being responsible. And with pretty good reason - they do have a track record. And what are the odds that accused Epstein "associate" Ghislaine Maxwell also "succumbs to grief" over the death of Epstein? Before she testifies of course.

Bravo Wikipedia on the new definition of "Suicide Watch".

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting and thought I'd share.

- Airship Ventures grounded by lack of funding. It is my dream to some day own a lighter than air airship. Some day.

- Tom Brady vs Andew Luck - through the eyes of their fathers. Jackie MacMullan is always a great read.

- If you've ever posted anything online then this was awesome.

- The wit here was so dry - possibly my favorite Wikipedia entry ever.

- Unintentionally Consequential. A new economics blog by Lee Bailiff. Good stuff!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I hope Nick Saban sells his Gatorade soaked shirt from last night on eBay and gives the money to charity. Just the same as what Doc Rivers did after the Celtics won the NBA championship. Face it - Saban will never wear that shirt again - why not put it to some good?... The Big Lebowski rewritten as a work of Shakespeare... If you wanted to see what the "streaker" "idiot" from last night's game looked like click here... On this day in 1835 the US national debt was reduced to $0 for the one and only time in history... Wow! What Britain would look like without the Gulf Stream... On this day in 1821 James Longstreet was born. Many people know him as a famous Confederate General. I remember him best for a line attributed to him in the great book The Killer Angels. Longstreet was considered something of an expert on poker and when asked "How often should one draw at an inside straight?" He answered "Never!" That piece of advice has stuck with me and saved me some money over the years... I've admitted to being a geek and a Doctor Who fan - so I found this amusing... It's a shame! Wikipedia lists many famous people born on this day including Elvis, David Bowie and Larry Storch but they don't list the great sports writer Joe Posnanski. Another example why you can't always trust Wikipedia...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I agree with Lou Merloni on the Adrian Beltre signing. I was actually looking forward to Casey Kotchman starting at 1st and Kevin Youkilis starting at 3rd but I have to trust Theo on these things (although there is such a thing as too much tinkering)... Speaking of mixed feelings - ESPN to launch 3D Network... This is a Horned Frog... With Boise State beating TCU and returning almost all of their starters on both offense and defense - they have to enter next year as the preseason #1? Right?... This is a Hypnofrog... I think Boise State used the power of cowbell to turn the TCU players from Horned Frogs into Hypnofrogs last night... I haven't checked this "fact" for myself but supposedly the Wikipedia article on Jesus of Nazareth is only 25 words longer than the Wikipedia article on Snake Eyes of GI Joe. That's both funny and screwed up at the same time... This is bukkake... Do you think the reason nobody has tried a remake of the show F Troop is because the name probably would mean something different today?... Cincinnati had 60 reported homicides last year. An interactive map...

Why You Have to Verify Info Found at Wikipedia

This was an entry from today's "this day in history" feature on Wikipedia:
451 - The Battle of Avarayr between Steven's vagina rebels and the Steven's penis takes place. The penis is defeated militarily but are guaranteed freedom to openly practise intercourse.
I'm fairly sure the Battle of Avarayr didn't involve a fight between Steven's vagina and Steven's penis.

Heh Heh

Wikipedia has a "this day in history" deal and I happened to check out the entry for tommorow and saw this as the final entry;
* 2007 - Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith are the first African American head coaches in the National Football League's Super Bowl

Peyton Manning will expose the Bears
I get the feeling that by morning that entry will be edited.
