Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Given the push by the NBA to "get out the vote" - it would be interesting to see how many eligible players actually did. My guess would be just under 50%... Very cool... Is it true that Eli Manning has been named celebrity spokesperson for Shake Weight? I understand he's been a longtime devotee... Nathan Fillion would be a good choice as a replacement for Alex Trebek on Jeopardy. Smart, humorous, self-effacing and Canadian - all the things Trebek brought to the show... On a related note Jesus Nut would also be a good name for a band... I have to wonder what percentage of "Flat Earthers" were public schooled? I imagine that percentage would be pretty high... I wonder if it bothers Tom Hanks or if he's secretly happy that Bosom Buddies was never widely shown in syndication...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The Red Sox Magic Number is now 8... God bless Fisher House. How can any politician say they support the troops while allowing military death benefits to go unpaid - especially when things like the Congressional gym remain open?... Love Nathan Fillion - it's great that he Tweeted this GIF of himself... Was Clint Eastwood right when he described President Obama as an empty chair? How do you negotiate with an empty chair?... Sorry Giants fans but this is funny... A Sequester in Ancient Rome was a man who held a bribe for a client until a politician delivered upon his promise. The more things change the more things remain the same... Cool simplified explanation of what the Higgs-Boson is all about... Is Larry Bird really so cheap that he has to resort to stealing other people's Chicken McNuggets?... Ha ha - this is awesome. Gotta love hockey...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting and thought I'd share.

- Bill James not only wants to rid the world of the unnecessary bunt but also thinks that eventually we will get rid of murder. Interesting interview.

- The dog days of summer are the proper time to argue over who was the greater NBA center - Rick Robey or Greg Ostertag

- Time-lapse photography of a dust storm in Arizona. I find the photography very cool but am concerned about damage dust storm did. Like seeing an accident on the side of the road not knowing if there was a fatality.

- David Hasselhoff is coming to "Sons of Anarchy."

- Swamp Ass PSA starring Nathan Fillion. Am I the only one who things to could market knock off Gold Bond Powder as Swamp Ass Powder?

- Very cool and thought provoking video. Where Good Ideas Come From by Steven Johnson. I look forward to the book.

- Mathieu Bich Fooled Penn and Teller. Very cool magic trick.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

June has been very good to the Red Sox. Jacoby Ellsbury has a hit in every game in June so far. He is 19 for 44 (.432) in that span raising season average to .317 from .292... Interesting phone call between President John Kennedy and Dwight Eisenhower regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis and potential nuclear war... It still blows my mind that Ronald Reagan was the original choice to play Rick Blaine in the classic Casablanca... June has been very good to the Red Sox. Adrian Gonzalez has at least 1 RBI in 8 straight games (12 RBI total in those 8 games)... Cool - TNT acquires rights to Castle for syndication. I'm a fan of the show and Nathan Fillion and I'm glad I'll have a chance to see re-runs on a regular basis... June has been very good to the Red Sox. David Ortiz is hitting .412 with 4 HR and 12 RBI so far in June... Pretty sure that in that after he strips down to his underwear and does that fancy dive off the plank that Captain Morgan gets raped by the guys in orange coats on other ship just after the commercial cuts away. He was asking for it... The Red Sox are paying Mike Cameron over $7 million this year. At what point do they realize that Cameron is a shell of the player he once was and cut him loose? They should give one of their young OF from Pawtucket a chance. Either Ryan Kalish or Josh Reddick would be better for the team. Give one of the younger players a chance. It will help to season them to take over for JD Drew next year or at least give them a chance to showcase their talent in case of a trade. Maybe the Red Sox are waiting for Kalish to recover from his injury to make a move?... The Red Sox are in Toronto to play the Blue Jays one more game. Here's a picture of the famous CN Tower in Toronto.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

On this day in 1309 – Pope Clement V excommunicates Venice and all its population. That just sounds strange to the moderns' ear but back in the day all of the subjects of a ruler were held to the actions of the ruler. So if the ruler was excommunicated then all his subjects were as well... Happy birthday to Nathan Fillion who turns 39 today. Captain Reynolds and Castle are two of my favorite characters.... On this day in 1945 during World War II - Operation Starvation, the aerial mining of Japan's ports and waterways began. Do you think today such an operation would be allowed to have such a politically incorrect name? More likely people would be asking why the Japanese hate us.... I really wanted to place a bet on Boston College winning the NCAA Men's Hockey but couldn't find any takers... It's been ten years since Ian Drury passed away. In his honor - hit someone with your rhythm stick today.

Favorite Actor

A buddy of mine last night asked me who was my favorite current actor in a drunken attempt to start a conversation between hands of cards. I told him Gabriel Byrne to throw him off his game (I knew he wouldn't know who Gabriel Byrne was).

This morning after thinking about it for a while - I came to the conclusion that I don't really have a favorite actor (someone who I'll watch just because they are in something). The closest to that for me is Nathan Fillion and Timothy Olyphant.

Favorite actor of all-time? Not sure I have one of those either but either Ward Bond or William Powell come closest to fitting the bill.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

In 2006 the Red Sox picked Kristopher Johnson with the 40th pick of the MLB draft. With the next pick the Yankees took Joba Chamberlain. Johnson is 3-9 with a 6.14 ERA for AAA Pawtucket... I'm a Nathan Fillion fan and I would pay money to see this movie. Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern. Pretty impressive trailer. Too bad it was put together by a fan and isn't real... Scrabble Champ - Toronto's Marc Rzepczynski has a tough name to spell but in Scrabble it would be worth just 38 pts - the Braves Javier Vazquez's name is worth 43 points... A vastly underrated movie from the 90's was Barbarians at the Gate. You never see this movie anywhere and that's too bad. James Garner was great in this HBO flick... Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - going into yesterday's game, Vernon Wells of Toronto is hitting just .172 at home but a smoking .337 on the road.... I caught the pilot of Warehouse 13 and I must say I was impressed. This series has lots of potential and I'll be sure to tune in for future episodes. The casting is very good and you can't help but like Saul Rubinek as Artie Nielsen... The American League record for pitchers used in a season is 32. The Indians have now already used 26 and we're not even at the All-Star break... In case you haven't been following it or haven't heard - Mariners Single-A prospect James McOwen had his hitting streak end at 45 games last night...
