Barney Miller, New York City and the Jets

The more things change - the more they stay the same; from the Barney Miller episode Hot Dogs in 1976:

Chano: When people lose faith in government it leads to anarchy. You know what anarchy is?
Yamana: That's when people run around doing what they feel like doing. Like the Jets.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Love dogs but if any appear on a GM's video feed during tonight's NFL Draft that's a good signal to bet that team's season total under the number. The dog show's that GM isn't really serious... If life gives you melons - you may be dyslexic... Heh Heh... Back in 1978 future Hall of Famer Robin Yount held out from Spring  training because he needed to decide if he wanted to be a pro baseball player or a pro golfer... ABC/Disney should re-make the TV show Barney Miller with Dave Attell playing the lead role... So those folks who did the COVID-9 models that were so very wrong - what other models of theirs have we been using?... "You act like mortals in all that you fear, and like immortals in all that you desire." - Seneca... The President Tweets for the US Navy to "shoot down and destroy" any harassing Iranian gun boats and the price of oil jumps (when it really needed a lift). That's how that works. But "shooting down?" Do the Iranians have flying boats?...

Abe Vigoda

Abe Vigoda is dead. He is no more. He's ceased to be. He's joined the choir invisible.

I learned about his death from Keith who pointed out that the site IsAbeVigodaDead.com was almost instantly updated (same with AbeVigoda.com). Vigoda was known for basically three things - playing Sal Tessio from The Godfather, Detective Fish from Barney Miller and for not being dead. Now he'll just be remembered for being Sal Tessio and Detective Fish.

When I think about Abe Vigoda - this episode of Barney Miller always comes to mind.

I was almost convinced that Abe Vigoda was immortal.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Like a good neighbor State Farm is there - with some sexy feet (Rex Ryan after getting into an accident)... Robin Ventura had a 58 game hitting streak while in college. If you used ESPN's thinking in hyping UConn women's streak record you would think that Ventura somehow passed Joe DiMaggio's 56 game record in the big leagues... Very cool letter from Texas A and M coach Mike Sherman... The obscure but entertaining Beef O Bradys Bowl did a 2.0 rating while the uber hyped UConn women's record win did a 1.0 - twice as many people cared about two teams who weren't even in the top 25 than the record breaking UConn team yet President Obama didn't call Coach Strong after the game... Prediction - in 2011 the Hamburgler will finally be brought to Justice while Mayor McCheese will be ousted by a Tea Party candidate... I find it amusing that same people who slam Sarah Palin are also ones who pay to see crap like Little Fockers... Holy crap! Never realized that McNulty is Scrooge's nephew Fred in Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol... My life just got a whole lot less productive now that I found that YouTube has most of the Barney Miller episodes online... The music video for Leather Hands "Vertical Lines" is genius - lousy song but music video is worth it.

Barney Miller on Jets Foot Fetishes

From the Barney Miller Hot Dogs episode:

Chano: When people lose faith in government it leads to anarchy. You know what anarchy is?
Yamana: That's when people run around doing what they feel like doing. Like the Jets.

Christopher Eccleston

Recently I have become a big fan of three science fiction TV series. It just sorta happened but I'm now hooked on the series Dr. Who, Heroes and the unfairly canceled Firefly.

I've meant to mention this before but since today's is Christopher Eccleston's 43rd birthday - today is as good a time as any. I've meant to bring this up because I was watching Heroes and there was a new character who I couldn't help but think looked very familiar. Then it hit me - the character Claude on heroes was Christopher Eccleston - the old Dr. Who. I say "old" Dr. Who because it was the "new" Dr. Who - David Tennant who really got me hooked on the series (and who is the much better of the two if you ask me).

And the reason this was worthy of note was because after watching like 4 episodes of Firefly - it finally hit me where I knew the actor who plays Shepard Book - Ron Glass. He was Detective Harris from the vastly under-rated Barney Miller.

So there you have it. Exciting epiphanies to me but boring crap to you.
