Hein ran in the 2012 election for Maine House of Representatives District 57. Hein lost against Andrew Worcester in the Republican primary on June 12, 2012. Incumbent Maeghan Maloney (D) ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[2]

Hein was summoned on a charge of theft by deception after an investigation by the Maine attorney general's office in May 2012.[3] Hein was accused of using his own money to meet the small donation threshold that would have allowed him to receive approximately $1,400 in Clean Elections for his primary campaign, and after that, another $3,900 for the general election.[3] The criminal charge was punishable by up to 364 days in jail or a $2,000 fine.[3] On June 6, 2012 Hein plead not guilty to the charges.[4] Hein was found guilty and sentenced to 7 days in jail for encouraging people to falsely claim they had given him small donations.[5]
