In information submitted to Ballotpedia, Upham stated, "As an Independent I would like to see more common use of checks and balances in the political discussion, meaning less partisanship. Our founding fathers were concerned that partisanship would cause stagnation and discourse. Voices of the citizens should be heard loud and clear and their representative and governing bodies reflect those voices. Government is not above the people it is the people. Therefore we vote for the qualified person not party."[1]
