Renter’s insurance newbie questions

I moved into a new place and the landlord requires renter’s insurance with his name and coverage amounts he specified. I got a policy from Lemonade but they can’t add him as additional insured, just additional interested. When you’ve had policies due to landlord requirements, how did you list your landlord and which company? I don’t have other insurance to bundle.

Need advice on whether or not to move to new apartment with more space

The rent is too darn high

Torn between re-signing my apartment lease despite a dramatic rent increase (over 20%) and moving. It should be an easy decision, but finding a new apartment would mean a significantly longer commute and/or losing some amenities I kind of depend on. Plus... I'm hopefully buying a place next year, and I hate the thought of moving twice in such a short time span. [more inside]

Best place to look for (rental) apartments in Austin, from elsewhere?

More or less just the subject line. I looked on Redfin and listings were sparse; looked on Craigslist and a lot of them looked fake. Where should I be looking? I haven't looked for an apartment anywhere in 15+ years.

Best way to soundproof a condo ceiling?

Moving into a new condo in three weeks, and I am wondering what the best way to soundproof it will be. Details: previous owner tells me that there's no insulation above the drywall, just empty space. Hardwood floors in the unit above me. I can hear a lot of noise above me--I can hear their conversations more clearly than any I have ever experienced in my 22 years of renting. If you have had this experience, what materials worked well for you? (I would love material that will help me retain cold air in my space as well, although I have a finite budget).

Moving to Idaho Seems Tough - Am I Doing It Wrong?

I live in Utah and would like to move to Idaho for a year, for hiking/ outdoors-ness (and skiing if possible, but not a dealbreaker). If I search Rentler in my price range (~$1500 for 1 bed apt) there’s almost nothing outside of Boise - even if I crank the search max up to $2000. Am I doing this wrong, or is Rentler not a good source for Idaho, or perhaps there are just not that many apartments for rent in Idaho?

I'll be moving from a private home shared with family into a small NYC apartment, and since the apartment is unfurnished I'd rather acquire some chosen pieces of new furniture than move around the existing furniture from the home. I really enjoy reading The Hunt, which follows individuals and families in their search for an apartment or home in and around NYC. Newer rental constructions in Philadelphia/where to live, 2021 edit.

Moving to Philly later this year, looking for possible places to live. Will be on a grad student budget but am willing to spend more on housing (but think: rent a studio, not more than that as finances will still be limited) because I want to live alone and feel safe (and I am a bit of a homebody and also COVID). I heard someone talking about newer constructions being impossibly flimsy and not good places to live, but I have lived in crappy old buildings before and don't really want that. What should I know about the Philly rental market and what is available as I look at places from a distance for now? More deets inside and thank you. [more inside]

How to navigate potential rent increase in 2021

Our landlady has the past two years increased our rent around the anniversary of our move in date. After the first year we've been month-to-month lease. We love our place and have no plans to move. Given the state of the world, the fact that we've been able to keep paying rent on time, and the current local market, I'd love to not have a rent increase this year. I'm not amazing at these sorts of conversations, so would love some advice on how to proceed. [more inside]

Why does my apartment have two kinds of power outlets?

I live in a recently renovated apartment in the US. My apartment has plentiful three prong power outlets, mostly two-to-a-panel. However, there are also a few single outlet panels, sometimes right next to the two-panel variety. The outlet itself is round and protrudes out from the panel a bit. Additionally, these don't seem to work? What could possibly be the reason for this?

Renewed my lease before new neighbor moved in... having panic attacks

This is a multipart problem. Firstly, my personal issues that I'm working on but can't overcome overnight and are causing me to feel powerless and depressed right now. I'm afraid of conflict but am working on it. Secondly, my home is my sanctuary. I lived in this apartment for 2 years, the first with a truly bad neighbor (let dogs use the balcony as the bathroom, subwoofer daily, stomping, throwing things) and then the neighbor after him was so quiet I could hardly tell she lived there and it was bliss. I signed my lease because I was so content and it would have been difficult to move now and look for a place with COVID going on. [more inside]

Hosting overnight guests comfortably in a one bedroom apartment

My partner and I are considering a one bedroom apartment for our next place. It’s almost 700 sq ft.
