I just bought a house, and for a variety of reasons, I'm starting to feel like I can't handle moving in right away. Can/should I keep my apartment and rent out the new place for a while until I'm ready? [more inside]

Are my tenant rights being violated?

I rent a house. The house has a small apartment downstairs. The apartment is not on separate meters for utilities. All the utilities are in my name & are paid by me. There is nothing about the apartment in the lease. The landlords live out of state & said in an email they would use the apartment for “long weekends” two or three times a year. That has not been the case. [more inside]

Craigslist scammer is threatening me. Do I need to worry?

I discovered an apartment rental scam on craigslist and so I made my own post in the same section, calling it a scam, in the hopes that it would help keep other people from becoming victims. Apparently this is a pretty common scam. Within hours the scammer emailed me threatening "consequences" if I don't remove it. How risky is this? Should I just give in and pull down my scam announcement, just to be safe? I just hate to see someone fall victim to it. [more inside]

In desperate need of a relaxing week at the beach

No mold, no paint, no laminate, where can I go?

Where to go and what to do when fresh paint and laminate flooring (in a fresh apartment or rental house) and mold and mustiness (in an older apartment or rental house) are both anathema? I'm seriously in a difficult situation now and not sure how to proceed. The short-term lodging I did find is not great and also slightly allergenic, and will be worse if cold weather forces closed windows. [more inside]

Only girl in sharehouse full of boys?

So. My application for a place has been approved but the agent conveniently decided only to tell me now that I'd be the only girl with 3 other boys (I asked at inspection who the other housemates were and she said they were students so I assumed it was mixed). The house was actually very neat and clean when I inspected, and my room is locked. I asked if I could meet the others and the agent said that was impossible because 2 of the 3 are rarely home. 2 of the boys are students with part-time jobs, and the third is fulltime in IT. Take the risk and move in, or not? [more inside]

Quiet, non-lux living along the Mediterranean this summer: where to?

My wife and I would like to rent a simple furnished apartment or small house somewhere along the Mediterranean this summer, for about a month. Where to find cheap housing in Seattle area?

I'm considering relocating to Seattle from the Midwest for a new job but am very concerned about affordable housing. Looking for a house or apartment rental within an hour's distance via public transit, if possible. Would like to spend between $1,000 and $1,500 if possible. Can go a bit higher. Would like a lot of space -- ideally, 1000 square feet. This would be for my wife, myself and our dog. Any advice about where I should be looking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tips for selling a rental property?

I have a house that I need to sell. It's currently occupied, and the tenants really love living there. I don't want to ask them to move out until I close, both because I need the rent to pay the mortgage until I sell, and because it's just mean to ask them to move out in winter (they've got two little kids). So I'm going to put it on the market while occupied. Are there any best practices here? [more inside]

Everyone in me is a bird, but landlords won't rent to any of us.

My current rental house is too small, so I'm looking for a larger house or apartment to rent when my lease is up next month. My friend needs advice on renting a house in San Diego.

My friend needs advice on renting a house in San Diego. He has been there for years, but he wants to scale down from 5 total roommates (including him) to 3 total roommates, including him. In order to scale down like this, he'll have to charge at least $1000 per roommate. Then each person will have tons of space. He wants roommates that are very nice, honest, and super-clean. Is this do-able? What can he do (he's in no position to make any major home improvements) to make it more likely that he'll find what he's looking for within a reasonable period of time?

Hardly shabby chic

My rental house's paint is peeling and generally looks incredibly shabby. My landlord said (verbally) when we moved in last July that he planned to paint it in a few months. A year later, it still hasn't been done. I've asked for updates several times and he says it's on the top of his list but temperature/weather have gotten in the way. Other than that I don't have anything in writing. Complication: his wife is hospitalized with stage IV cancer. He's notified tenants of this as a reason why he's less than responsive lately. Other than the painting issue, he's a great person/landlord. Should I press the issue? If so, what can I do? I'm really torn because his reasons are valid, but my house looks so bad at this point that I'm embarrassed to have guests over.

Oh, you want working windows? Yeah, it's gonna be a while.

I moved into an apartment in a Victorian house last Friday and about 5 minutes after I start moving in I realize that the windows are in terrible shape. The wood frames have rotted, some windows don't open, some don't close. At least one had a broken frame like it broke when someone was trying to shit the window. A couple have cracked panes. Probably half of them are missing the locking mechanisms so I can't lock them. [more inside]
