How would you approach this lingering congestion?

After about ten days, I can't seem to kick this lingering congestion. Not bad enough to knock me out of commission, but I have things to do and people to see and no one wants me sniffling all over them. What should I do? [more inside]

What Light In Yonder Window...

Do you see a light-up star and think Baby Jesus? Does a peace sign in my window make you think I'm still talking to half of my family? Because I'm not. And I'm fine with it. Still, I would like to display something that is illuminated in my living room window, something that shares a message of kindness and love that transcends one specific faith and acknowledges the reality of where we are. Ideas? [more inside]

How to deal with not having a ton of great Christmas gifts for my kids?

Looking for suggestions for dealing (emotionally & practically) with not showering my kids with amazing presents. Tips on powering through pesky "I'm destroying Christmas" feelings leading up to the day? Ideas on helping us all slow down & savor the gift opening on Xmas? Do you have Christmas Day routines, rituals, or traditions that smooth over the post-gift "now what" feeling? What other kinds of magic can I infuse into the season? [more inside]

Comedy monologue: Kids in the Hall?

In the late nineties I was visiting my dad and watched an incredibly uncomfortable comedy sketch in which a flamboyantly gay character gave advice for those visiting family at the holidays. Given that it was EXACTLY what I was doing at the time it was simultaneously intensely uncomfortable and quite possibly the funniest thing I’d ever seen. I would have SWORN it was a Kids In The Hall skecth- after searching, I’d think a buddy Cole monologue- yet my Google fu is failing me and not turning up what I remember. The one bit I’m sure of is that the speaker asserts that one should “GET A HOTEL.” Any idea what it is? THANK YOU

Long distance family holidays

What family holiday traditions do you have that can be conducted remotely? We're looking for a way to do some bonding with the extended family over the holidays. We can't all convene in the same spot, and I think some are getting burned out on gift-giving. What other ways have you found to be a part of each other's lives for Christmas?

Coping and Conflict During Holidays with a Narcissistic Parent

An old story of Christmas holidays. My maternal parent is narcissistic (perhaps malignantly so, at least in terms of the aggression and internal fragility, although not as bad as Livia Soprano), bad at boundaries, and excellent at semantic arguments. From therapy I'm newly trying to calmly defend my own boundaries with as little conflict as possible. For a few days I'm visiting. It's too late in life to effect much change in them. Strategies on coping and handling conflict would be very much appreciated.

Your favorite upcoming online auctions for good causes!

I recently missed out (by a few hours, arggg) on an online auction for a local cause I care about that had some really great items (especially things that were more in the "services" arena, eg virtual music lessons or piano lessons, editing help, massages, stuff like that.) Do any of YOU all know of any great online auctions for your favorite causes coming up? i'd love to hear about them! Location not so important, I'm thinking, as I wouldn't bid on anything that had to be sent or picked up far from me. Thanks : )

Swiss Colony for more refined palates?

Orbital holidays

I'm trying to think of all the events related to the earth's orbit that might be celebrated on a regular basis. Solstices and equinoxes, obviously. There's also distance to the sun which gives us perihelion and aphelion. I have additional questions about those inside.
