Books like the ones I loved lately

I just read both Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez and All Adults Here by Emma Straub. Both had modern characters figuring out their lives and multiple view point characters and were centered around families. I really liked the deep dives into multiple characters. I especially appreciated that Olga is Latine, so other Latine books would be appreciated but in general I'm looking for literary/just plain fiction books that go deep into a set of characters. International relationship, visa, money and red flags

Family member is in a relationship with someone from another country whom he met online, and has met in person in her country since then. He is in the UK and she is from a poorer country (not in the EU). He wants her to visit him in the UK. She has asked him to give her £5K so that she is able to get a visa (I assume so she can show means of support whilst in the UK). This is raising red flags for the rest of us. Is this likely to be a scam? [more inside]

Reasonable to skip a tricky wedding? difficulty level: mom

An extended family member, who I am cordial with but not at all close to, is getting married in a multi-day event, far from where I live with very limited transportation. If it were anyone else I had a similar level of relationship to, I would have already sent regrets. My mother will be very unhappy if I do this, regardless of the logistical difficulty in doing so. Is there a way I can skip it? (more details inside) [more inside]

Children as the "property" of their parents??

I'm dealing with a situation in which a couple has asserted (as a defense) that children are the property of their parents. This assertion is often made in conflicts of medical ethics, such as Christian Scientists vs medical caregivers. I think that Mennonites and Amish may actually teach that children are their parents' property. Does anyone have more information on this, specifically whether the Jehovah Witness religion teaches this?

Did you take your family to Jamaica? How did it go?

We're thinking of doing Jamaica for Christmas. We're hearing conflicting reports about how safe it is, how serious harassment by hustlers and panhandlers is, etc. We've heard ten different schools of "common knowledge" ranging from: okay if you stay in a resort to okay if you keep your head about you to completely okay and shame on you for doubting. I'm tired of asking my pal Google and I'm looking for first hand experience. Specifically, we're interested in Negril/Montego Bay. [more inside]

Disability insurance for maternity leave in NYC

Seeking information on how weddings are similar to funerals.

I am interested in learning more about anthropological approaches to family structure, and especially marriages and funerals. I have heard that anthropologists think of marriages and funerals as fundamentally similar because they are about shifts in who is a member of a family. A marriage adds someone, and a funeral takes someone away. Both marriages and funerals often take place in religious settings. Extended families are invited to both. A ritualized meal follows both a wedding and a funeral. These events are announced in newspapers, etc.. Can you tell me what anthropologists have written about these structural similarities of weddings and funerals? Any leads would be most appreciated.

Where are the best places in LA to live with a family?

You're considering a move to Los Angeles for a job in Irvine. You and your (stay-at-home) wife are both in your early 30s, and have two young (under two years old) children. You were raised in the midwest, and prefer the suburbs. You want to live in an area that has lots of other young families and easy access to eating and shopping and preschools and other things like that. You don't want to spend more than 30 minutes or so commuting. You want to spend about $3,000 per month on rent for a 3+ bedroom single-family-home (or condo, you suppose). What areas of Los Angeles do you focus on?
