Recommend me a cute, modern craft kit, please
I want to get a little crafting gift for a college student, and I'm looking for a full kit that includes everything. I love Subversive Cross Stitch, but none of her messages are right for this giftee. Who sells a cute, modern kit that might fit my needs? Doesn't need to be cross stitch; could be another type of stitching, but overall needs to be something you can do by hand in a dorm room.
Craft project decision-point: stop, continue, or start over?
I made a fused glass house number to post on a rock at the top of our driveway. I'm not super-satisfied with how it came out (so far?). I'd like opinions and advice on the three options I have from here. [more inside]

What findings would you use with this chain?
I have a bunch of short lengths of a tubular metal jewelry chain and I'd like to figure out how best to cap them so I can use them in jewelry? Pics of an example of the chain on Imgur. [more inside]
felting newbie
I just fell in love with felting (wet felting was fun, making felt balls delightful and especially delightful when we cut them in half to see the squishy swirly patterns we made inside, and needle felting straight up therapeutic). This is my first textile craft ever and I am a little muddled as to what I do next. [more inside]

Craft: DIY non-plastic drawstring toggles
I have been sewing and embroidering drawstring bags and want to figure out how to secure them with the same efficiency of a plastic toggle with a spring, but without using plastic. Happy to buy a replacement product, even happier to learn how to make my own. And yes, I can tie a knot but those tighten over time - unless you have an awesome boat knot that would work? Crafty mefites help me get my dream of putting everything in my house in an embroidered bag.
I bought a dremel. Tell me everything!
I bought a dremel a couple days ago after years of thinking about it; got here today, tested it out, and I'm already very satisfied with it being a good solution for the soft carving I was primarily getting it for (soapstone, anthracite coal, wood). But now I've got this good tool and no experience with it, so: what else might I want to get for it for carving/shaping art and craft purposes, and, hell, what else in particular have folks found themselves surprised/pleased to be able to accomplish in general with a rotary tool? What can I make in 3 weeks?
I have a 3 week break between intense jobs, and would like to take the time to make something DIY/hands-on that can be done in about 50-60 hours. I am reasonably crafty and have a small budget. Constraints are: no workroom or garden, no power tools beyond a Dremel and sewing machine, not knitting/crochet or cooking (working on those already). Most of my bookmarked projects are things I can do in 1-10 hours max. I'd appreciate unusual ideas.
What has been your favorite art/craft/design/food one-time activity?
Can you recommend a one-time course that would be a fun date activity? It can be any art, craft, design, food, or other fun interactive class. What maker/art/craft/etc. What have you done in the past that you loved?
DIY dollhouse or diorama miniature kits
I love these Rolife miniature kits but I don't really want to keep them around after they're finished as I am not crazy about the aesthetic. Are there other model kits out there like this but less twee? [more inside]

ball bearing-eque items to help shake up powder in liquid
I have a compounded medication that keeps coming out of solution; the solids settle on the bottom and will _not_ mix back up without about a half hour of pounding, warming, and/or sticking some kind of stick in there to mix everything up the hard way. What can I put in there to help the mixing action, and where can I get it? Lowe's doesn't seem to have ball bearings in stock. [more inside]
Interesting uses for bamboo branches?
There's some running bamboo planted near me (I didn't do it!) that I harvest sometimes for garden stakes, trellises, et cetera. I trim off all the small twigs/branches, and I hate to just waste those, but I'm not sure what to do with them. I've read that it's a bad idea to use them for kindling due to the trapped air. What are some interesting craft-y projects I could try to use them with? Pictures/video of finished projects highly appreciated! They're pretty thin (less than a pencil) and generally between 1-3 feet long.
More art = less assholes
I am trying to wean myself away from spending too many hours a day reading AITA on Reddit. I can literally feel it making me a less kind person as I spend time there. My chosen replacement addiction is Instagram, where I like to follow artsy-craftsy accounts. I got a lot of great suggestions a few years ago, and am hoping for more ideas from the hive mind. Drunk conversation about craft techniques lead to confusing google
There's some kind of craft technique where you jam roving or something fuzzy in between the stitches of a mitten or whatever that you knitted/crocheted, so that the fluffy stuff is on the inside. It's sort of like punch needle and sort of like felting, but not. Is this a thing, and if so, what is it called so I can look it up?
How can I get thin, clear, stiff plastic strip/ribbon?
I'm looking for essentially a clear stiff ribbon about 3/16" - 3/8" wide, and at least three feet long (a roll of a few yards would be better). I'd love silicone, but I can only find super thin/stretchy elastic, and that will be too difficult for my use case: using it with some thin double-sided tape to slightly extend the edge of glass terrarium doors. Animals to represent East and West
For a craft project, I'm trying to think up animals that could represent "East" and "West".
(For context, "North" and "South" are going to be polar bears and penguins).
I would need to find fabric with these animals, so nothing super specific please.
Any ideas?
Looking for a craft
Winter is coming, which means early nights and tv at night. I'm looking for a new hobby/craft, especially something I can do in the evenings while I'm watching tv. Basically, I'd like something that I can do with my hands without having to think too much while doing it. [more inside]
Help me recreate this lamp - for cheap

How can I learn to make cast clay sculptures?
I'm an artist and I sometimes make small clay sculptures and get them fired. I don't know a ton about this process on a technical level. I want to learn to sculpt one of something (out of whatever, but ideally something that doesn't dry out too quickly) and make a bunch of them out of some kind of clay - porcelain? ceramic? I'm not even sure what this would be called, but ideally not resin, though I would consider it if necessary – using molds. [more inside]
Makers of metafilter, how do you not hate-pick your own products?
I'm making a short run of books and all I can see towards is every flaw. These are partly inherent to the variable nature of the materials and process, and partly being The Worst Craftsperson In The World. Rationally, I can see that someone not in the same field will go yay, but all I see is every tiny flaw writ large. This is why I hate handmaking presents although I love receiving them. Magnify this a thousand times for anything handmade for sale. How do you distinguish between real flaws and "only visible to you" flaws?

A beautiful, handmade guilt trip
As our family gathered for xmas this year we went through a chest of linens handmade by my grandmother and great aunts. This is absolutely beautiful work that took hundreds of hours, however we really have no use for the items. Has anyone successfully found homes for these type of things? [more inside]
Can this craft project be saved?

Thanksgiving after meal activities
Hi! My family is getting together this year and would like to have some sort of craft to make. Challenge: toddler friendly, adult interesting, can go on an airplane after, and is as green/eco friendly as possible. Food is OK so long as it's very low mess (decorating cookies is too much mess)

NYC Filter: Where can I buy strap-type craft supplies?
I am trying to make some carrying straps and I am looking to explore a range of material options in person in NYC.
I'm looking for like... seat belt kind of stuff but thinner, shoestring-like material, and like... fabric in thin strips? Also maybe stuff like buckles and clips and whatnot...
I am not so much looking for ribbon.
Any stores come to mind?

How to finish a cross-stitch project?
Creative people and crafters, please advise me: I'm making a cross-stitch for someone, and it's going to be about 5x7 inches when complete. I want to do something to "finish" it -- but I don't want to frame it. What other options do I have?
Resources that demystify (fiction) writing
Short gist of what I'm loooking for:
Detailed descriptions of writing/drafting process, authors releasing a step by step timeline of their various drafts a la Brandon Sanderson, thoughtful discussion of the how writing works, guides to how to break down a piece and figure out what makes it work/tick, things like that. [more inside]
Crafty Cross Stitch for Goofballs: Xmas 2018 Edition
I would really like to create a little cross stitch and frame it as part of a Christmas gift for my girlfriend. It would feature a short catchphrase of ours that has been part of an in joke ever since we met and... there's something whimsically lovely about the idea that I think she'll really appreciate. BUT I haven't stitched a single stitch since a series of rainy afternoons around 30 years ago. PLEASE HALP! [more inside]

Ideas for children's art projects that can be made in about 15 minutes?
Please give me your ideas for art/craft projects that children ages 5-11 can make in a relatively short amount of time. Anything with science-y elements would be especially appreciated, but not required. These will be for an arts event with several creation stations that the kids can circulate among, so it’s not expected that they’d spend more than 15 minutes or so at any particular project. These could be collaborative, but should also be possible to do individually.
Warming up cool LEDs

Jewelry crafters : recommend adjustable ring blanks that don't suck
My mom is a hobby ceramist and makes all kinds of little beads and baubles from clay and porcelain. She likes to mount them into necklaces, earrings (pendants) and rings. I want to gift her with good quality supplies for her birthday.
What are your favourite ring blanks to work with? for reference she uses something like this a.t.m. [more inside]
What kind of art paper is this?
I found it in my stash and I am really enjoying it for mixed media. But I don't know what kind of paper it is, and I am far away from the art stores in Seattle where I bought it. It is kind of slippery, like Yupo, but only a little. It is very thin, and it seems to have an organic texture, like a watermark, throughout. But there is also a dot pattern that seems machine generated. [more inside]
Halloween DIY-filter: giant paper mache head

Help me be a good art fair vendor!
I'm gonna be one of a couple dozen vendors at an upcoming local arts and crafts fair, and it's my first time doing something like this.
