Recommended NYC lumberyard for bookshelf-building wood?

I'm considering building my own bookshelves per this design by Teresa Nielsen Hayden. She specifies board sizes and suggests, "go to a lumber yard that will cut wood to size and give them a list of how many boards you want in what sizes". I seek a lumber yard in or near New York City that will deal with me (a novice) fairly and communicate well. I'm happy to speak on the phone. I prefer to work with independent shops rather than national chains. I'd need them to deliver (I live in Western Queens).

Exposed posts, and rafters. What type, and how are they finished?

Ultra-beginner woodworking and furniture building for the non-homeowner

Instagram has been showing me videos by folks who use (mostly) hand tools to build stuff out of wood. This looks pretty awesome! I currently own extremely basic tools (hammer, set of wrenches, a screwdriver, one power drill). Is it possible to get into woodworking without thousands of dollars of equipment? I have no idea how to even get started. [more inside]

Issues storing kiln-dried, certified pest-free wood indoors?

I'm about to start heating exclusively using a woodstove in the Northeast US. I'm buying a face cord initially because I can't store much wood on the property. I'm planning to store half of that on an indoor rack. Any major issues? I know bugs are a problem with seasoned wood, but kiln-dried is another story, right?

Maybe refinishing a desk, and pricing it either way

I’m going to sell a used Pottery Barn Rockridge desk. It’s well-made and has great style, but the top surface needs some refinishing. Wood fired woes

How to get quality, zero VOC furniture without breaking the bank?

I'm going to be furnishing a large space starting from almost scratch. How can I get furniture that is high quality (solid wood, all or mostly hardwood, joins instead of screws everywhere when possible), zero VOC (cushions that are filled with wool, cotton, latex, down, etc. rather than foam), and ideally no synthetic fibers (upholstery that uses wool, cotton, linen, silk) at the best possible price? how best to protect woodwork outdoors?

We have a slab of eucalyptus currently being engraved with text, to be used as a marker outside tilted with the lettering upward, and fully exposed to the weather: rain, sun, whatever. (This is in California, so frost is rare and it has never snowed here yet). What is the best protective clear coating to use, if any? Suggestions have been to leave it as plain wood, covering with clear epoxy, and painting with marine spar varnish, but I've seen instances of each of the latter peeling, so I'm hoping someone can recommend what will last longest.

Will duct tape peel off plywood and look awful?

I'm building a climbing wall for a 5 year old. I got the pre-sanded plywood. But the edges are still a little splintery. I'm thinking of just putting some decorative ducttape around the edge...so it would sit on the edge and then some of it would fold over on to the face of the climbing wall. Will that be totally cool or is it going to look like crape in 2 or 3 years?
