Carpenters and Masons unite!
I want to attach a long piece of granite (formerly a kitchen counter backstop) to an upright 4x4 post. How to do this? (photos)
Recommended NYC lumberyard for bookshelf-building wood?
I'm considering building my own bookshelves per this design by Teresa Nielsen Hayden. She specifies board sizes and suggests, "go to a lumber yard that will cut wood to size and give them a list of how many boards you want in what sizes". I seek a lumber yard in or near New York City that will deal with me (a novice) fairly and communicate well. I'm happy to speak on the phone. I prefer to work with independent shops rather than national chains. I'd need them to deliver (I live in Western Queens).

Exposed posts, and rafters. What type, and how are they finished?
I am envisioning a house with exposed posts, and rafters. But what type of wood, and how are they finished? Off-the-lot wood is rough, 2x6s great for support, but for exposed ceiling rafters?
And a couple of nice posts?
How do I care for the wood on the exterior of my house?
We've got a wood accent wall on the exterior of our house. It looks like the weather might be starting to affect it (a little graying, not in picture). What can I do to keep it looking good? [more inside]
Are Etsy chair makers any good?
Are Etsy chair makers any good?
I'd like to purchase 6-8 dining room chairs with a mid-century sculptural style, made of actual wood. The least expensive option from a normal retailer I can find is this Ikea Skogsbo chair. [more inside]
Removing old scotch tape on a finished wooden door
I am moving office and need to clean off my office door. It is a finished wooden door, and there are several (think 30) items taped to it. I need to remove the tape in the fastest and least harmful-to-the-door means possible. [more inside]
Help me with my hell hallway
Looking for fixes and improvements I can implement for my crappy apartment hallway floor - a wood floor with splintery bumps and crevices. [more inside]
Ultra-beginner woodworking and furniture building for the non-homeowner
Instagram has been showing me videos by folks who use (mostly) hand tools to build stuff out of wood. This looks pretty awesome! I currently own extremely basic tools (hammer, set of wrenches, a screwdriver, one power drill). Is it possible to get into woodworking without thousands of dollars of equipment? I have no idea how to even get started. [more inside]
Labelling Wood Cabinets/Drawers
I've recently moved and the living room has built in cabinets/drawers (imgur). What can we use to stick labels on the drawers that won't ruin the finish but also not look like crap? [more inside]
What are these lengths of "plastic wood" left over from a reno project?
After a recent house reno, workers left a small pile of lumber under a tarp. Among the lumber were two long ~1 x 6 boards which are made of some kind of plastic (pic one, two). [more inside]
Issues storing kiln-dried, certified pest-free wood indoors?
I'm about to start heating exclusively using a woodstove in the Northeast US. I'm buying a face cord initially because I can't store much wood on the property. I'm planning to store half of that on an indoor rack. Any major issues? I know bugs are a problem with seasoned wood, but kiln-dried is another story, right?
Maybe refinishing a desk, and pricing it either way
I’m going to sell a used Pottery Barn Rockridge desk. It’s well-made and has great style, but the top surface needs some refinishing. I goofed and listed it too cheaply, got a lot of interest right away, and took the listing down (with apologies). Should I refinish it, and if so, how? If I do and if I don’t, how much should I ask? [more inside]
Wood fired woes
A little over three years ago I had a Jotul F400 wood stove installed. Not long ago the little arm to adjust air flow broke and now the heater is stuck on full air. The two distributors in Australia who actually bothered to reply to me have quoted me 6-12 months just to order the part in, issues with warranty and cost aside.

How to get quality, zero VOC furniture without breaking the bank?
I'm going to be furnishing a large space starting from almost scratch. How can I get furniture that is high quality (solid wood, all or mostly hardwood, joins instead of screws everywhere when possible), zero VOC (cushions that are filled with wool, cotton, latex, down, etc. rather than foam), and ideally no synthetic fibers (upholstery that uses wool, cotton, linen, silk) at the best possible price?
The ideal style would be mid-century modern. [more inside]
Can you build a wooden deck with wood so close the ground?
This likely falls into fantasy-land for me, but this is my dream deck. But wouldn't the wood flush with the ground rot? [more inside]
Hypochondriac finishing wood
I’ve got a bunch of unfinished wood projects I need to finish, but I’m a hypochondriac and chemicals that smell stress me out. Are there any materials out there that would help me understand risks involved or that would put my mind at rest so I can get on with the job?! [more inside]
Wood floors in bathroom and other options
Remodeling bathroom that has real solid wood under very ugly sheet vinyl. Will remove the vinyl and if it can be done without damaging the unerlying wood floor I want to keep the wood floor as the "new" floor. But I am told that wood floors are not good in a bathroom. Even if it is sealed? [more inside]
Talk to me about pellet stoves!
I am a new pellet stove owner and other than following along with the relevant subreddit, are there other places you have gone online that have good info, or do you have advice that you gained after some pellet stove ownership time that you think might be helpful? [more inside]
Cutting Board Care Redux
As in this five year old question I have two carving boards that are more or less severely cracked around the edges. Clearly I need to be oiling them "more," but how often do I need to be oiling them and how much oil should I be applying? [more inside]
Looking to get framed
I am looking for this wooden picture frame with inlaid and edge coloring (any range of sizes): one | two. I'd love to get another precisely like it in the same or similar colors; however, there is no maker's mark on the frame itself, which is why I am asking here. [more inside]
reminiscent of a futon couch, but easier to move
Any ideas (photos of examples/ideas, woodworking plans, just thoughts) for building a simple (or complex) sofa, easier to move than a futon, with removable cushions, that's also very comfortable? Example: I'm exploring the world of innerspring crib mattresses. Looking for: above-average comfort; easy to move/disassemble; back slopes slightly (not straight up-and-down) like a sofa. [more inside]
Looking for a Silverware Set with Wood or Turquoise Handles
I'm trying to find a silverware set for sale with either wooden or turquoise handles, as close as possible to the one featured in this photo. I'd consider either a new set or, if this kind of thing isn't being made as much any more, an antique set in good condition. I've browsed through the offerings from places like Crate and Barrel, Anthropologie and Williams-Sonoma, but have been striking out so far. [more inside]
How to commission a wooden laser cut project?
I have a gift idea for someone and it involves laser cutting and engraving a flat wooden object, but I am by no means a "maker" type person and have no idea how to get it made. Not only that, I have no idea how to even find someone who can help me get it made. Please help me...more details below the fold. [more inside]
How to fix warped wooden game tiles?

What are the pros and cons of wood windows, can I even get them?
We’re looking at replacing the windows in our 1980’s home in North Carolina. The current windows are wood, and the windows and indoor trim are stained wood which we’d like to keep. It seems like all windows are vinyl these days. Do we give up and just go with the vinyl? [more inside]
What product do I want to "varnish"/finish a dried fennel stalk?
That's the whole question. What product would I need in order to seal a dried fennel stalk? They are woody but not made of wood as far as I can tell, but are rather durable. I want something to preserve it and make it less likely to fall apart when whacked upon...various things. Thank you for your thoughts!
Would like a matte sealer for a freshly-sanded wooden door
I have a wooden door in our laundry room that’s gotten quietly unsightly over the years. I am looking for a non-shiny sealant to protect it from moisture and hopefully that brings out the warmth of the wood. [more inside]
What's eating our wooden raised beds?

how best to protect woodwork outdoors?
We have a slab of eucalyptus currently being engraved with text, to be used as a marker outside tilted with the lettering upward, and fully exposed to the weather: rain, sun, whatever. (This is in California, so frost is rare and it has never snowed here yet). What is the best protective clear coating to use, if any? Suggestions have been to leave it as plain wood, covering with clear epoxy, and painting with marine spar varnish, but I've seen instances of each of the latter peeling, so I'm hoping someone can recommend what will last longest.
Raised Planter Box - Treated Wood
I made a raised planter box from reclaimed pressure-treated wood and didn't consider its possible issues - e.g. toxicity - until it was finished.

What is this?
What is this wood stand? I found it in a neighbors free pile. I think its for gardening/yard stuff, but my mom didn't recognize it after a lifetime of gardening.
What finishes to use for coloring a twisty walking stick
I found a vine-twisted stick, and cleaned it up into a walking stick. I was going to finish it with tung oil, but first I'd like to color and stain the parts that were under the vine, to heighten the contrast of the twist. I'd love a metallic copper highlight that blends into a dark stain. I don't know what materials to use. [more inside]
Will duct tape peel off plywood and look awful?
I'm building a climbing wall for a 5 year old. I got the pre-sanded plywood. But the edges are still a little splintery. I'm thinking of just putting some decorative ducttape around the edge...so it would sit on the edge and then some of it would fold over on to the face of the climbing wall. Will that be totally cool or is it going to look like crape in 2 or 3 years?
Untreated Home Depot wood - safe for sleeping next to?
I bought untreated wood planks and cut them at Home Depot and put them under one end of my mattress, creating an incline, to help alleviate my GERD symptoms. It's been 2 days of sleeping with a strong wood smell, which got me thinking - is sleeping inches away from a pile of untreated wood irritating/damaging to my health? I really know nothing about home construction... [more inside]
What kind of material can I buy custom-cut to size, and where?
I want a piece of material with these dimensions: 2-3"D x 161"L x 1-1.75"H. (Or, it can be two pieces with an 80.5"L.) I don't care if it's wood, plywood, MDF, or something else, as long as it's rigid and can bear weight. Ideally it will be paintable. Where can I buy this exact thing? [more inside]
What kind of wood is this?

galvanized / tin strapping?
I want to make old-style heavy-duty wooden storage crates, reinforced by metal straps, like these ones. I believe what I want is tin or galvanized tin metal, but I'm not totally sure. I want it to be ~1/2" wide, easy to cut, and not have holes in it already. Steel seems too difficult to work with. Why can't I find this??? [more inside]
Anybody love their corner clamps? I need some.
I have been enchanted with the apparent ease of corner clamps like these, but I suspect they really aren't that great to use. I want to clamp things from 1/4" up to 1.75" or even more, and these are too small anyway. Plus there are umpteen different versions. Can you point me to some convenient and not-too-expensive corner clamps? Of any type? I would like to be able to make boxes quickly. [more inside]
quick and dirty way to darken wood furniture?
woodworkers and furniture restorers of metafilter: I have a mid-century coffee table with a veneer top and solid legs. I'd like to change the color slightly because it blends in with the floor right now, but there is no way I'm stripping/refinishing it in this lifetime. can I slap something over the top of the existing finish to darken the wood grain? I'm ok with some light sanding and brief use of noxious chemicals if needed but don't want to paint it a solid color.
Finding a new desk
A few years ago I had desk I really liked but had to get rid of. I'm love to try and find something similar but really don't know how to describe it so I'm able to what I'm looking for. It was an all wood desk with dovetail joints, but the thing that I loved about it was the front of the desk didn't end is a sharp edge but rolled forward down into the rest of the desk. [more inside]
Treating plywood for kitchen use

How to attach a board to a stucco wall
I need to attach a 1"x6" redwood board (ten feet long) to a stucco wall; it's to be flat against the wall, and run horizontally. What's the best way to do that? Redwood is fragile, and the stucco shouldn't be compromised; the edges will be caulked, and the board may be painted later.
