Be it known that I, PETER B. TURNER, of Quincy, in the county ofNorfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Bracket for Shingling Roofs, Ste., ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention.

Figure 4 is a section of the cross-bar and stud.

Similar letters indicate like parts in the the several figures.

The object of my invention is to produce a bracket or support for a person engaged in the operation of shingling roofs of buildings, so as to combine safety with casy of' adjustment, and a ready mea'ns of removal during the operation, and atv the same time admit of being readily adapted to roofs of different pi'tch.

And the invention consists in thc employment of a series of bars, and a wedge-shaped block, so arranged as to form a clamp, which is set and operated in such a manner that the sharp end of the wedge-block is pushed underneath the shingles which have previously been fastened to the roof; the bar-is then driven with its wedgelike head against the upper surface of the shingle, so as'to clamp about a third of thc length of the shingle between the bar and the wedge-block, and spurs are then forced into the shingle for further protection against slipping. i

Referring to the drawings, A represents an adjustable bar, providcdat one end with a wedge-shaped head,

aLto the upper edge of which is hinged the plate B. To the outer' end of the plate B are secured, so as to turn freely, the braces C C. The lower ends ofthe said braces are fixed in the heads ofthe studs c c', which latter pass through the ends ofthe crossbar D, and are pointed at their lower ends, as shown in iig. 4l

The bar D is provided with a slot at its centre, through which passes the bar A, the latter being provided with a series .of holes, through which the pin (Z passes. byA which the two are secured in position, andl by which they arc adjusted. j

'Upon thc bar A is fitted, so as to slide freely, the block E, as shown. The latter is provided with a set-screw, by which it is'seeured to the bar AX y The block 'Eis constructed with the two jaws t the upper jaw or portion L resting upon the bar A, and theglower one extending beyond the upper one, and provided with the spurs o o o o on its upper face. Onthe under side of the block E, are spurspp, to prevent thc same from slipping.

When the device is in use, the thin edge of the jaw 1f of the block E is placed under the thick end of a shingle, which is fastened to the roof, and on the top of the shingle is placed the head aof the bar A. The screwjr being then operated, the shingle is firmly grasped or clamped. The cross-head1) is then brought to a point on the bar A, so as to bring the plate B to a horizontal position.

Another bracket is arranged at a suitable distance from the above named, and the two thus support a board or plank, upoh which the workmen stand. The bracket is prevented from slipping by the studs ec and spurs p.

By releasing the screw V11,4410 bar A is loosened, and the block E easily removed, so that the position of the bracketcan be easily changed.
