Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES J. NELSON OF ROCKFOR-D, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED ROCKING-CHAIR.-
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 72,668, dated December 24, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. This invention consists of sprin gshocs placed under the rockers of an ordinary rockin g-chair, bearing a foot-board in front, by pressing against which with the feet the sitter is enabled to set the chair a-rocking, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will noW proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a rocking-chair of ordinary construction. a a represent elastic shoes, of form similar to that of the rockers, except that they taper and come to a point lat their rear ends, in order that they may have the requisite flexibility. The shoes a are attached tothe rockers in any suitable manner at or near the hind legs of the chair, as shown in the drawings at a a.
b represents a foot-board, with prongs b',
which enter sockets c, placed on the front ends ofthe shoes a. By means of the prongs and sockets the foot-board is held in place. The arrangement is such that the former may be easily Withdrawn from the latter at pleasure,
`and the chair be used in the ordinary manner.
The rockers are provided with spurs d near their front ends, Which project upward on the inside of the rockers, and serve to prevent the 'front part of the chair from moving sidewise.
Operation.
The occupant of the chair, by pressing against the foot-board and the back of the chair at the same time, is enabled to force them apart, and thus produce a rocking n10- tion.
The shoes may be made. of wood or other suitable material.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spring-shoes a a, in combination with the chair A, substantially as described.
