Description
@anni effin,
GABRIEL D. HEATWOLE, OF BRIDGEWATER, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 113,662, dated April 11, 1,871.
IMPROVEMEN'I IN CHAIRS AND BEDS COMBINED.
The Schedule referred to in these LettersPatent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL D. HnA'rwoLE, of Bridgewater, in the county of Rockingham and in` the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Combined Chair and Bed; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon makinga part of this specification.l
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined chair and bed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will noww proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure l is a side view showing it as a rockingchan; and
Figure 2 is a similar view snowing it as a bed.
A represents the seat, supported upon legs B B, provided with rockers G.
The back D is hinged to the rear legs in such a manner that it can be thrown backward, and when in aunpright position the side pieces of the back will form, as it were, eontinuations oi' the rear legs, as shown in iig. l. I
At a suitable height on the back D are hinged side pieces E, which form the arm-rests, the front ends of the same being hinged to the upper ends of bars G, these bars being in turn hinged to the upper front corners of the front legs. l
From the arrangement of the hinges of these varions parts it will be seen that when the back D is in an upright position the arm-rests E mustnecessarily be horizontal, and the bars G lie close to the front sides ot' the front legs.
The back D is held in this upright position by means of a brace, H, ou each side, pivoted to the back and hooking over a headed bold or screw, a, in the side of the front leg.
A slide, I), on the under side of the brace, prevents it from unhooking.
At the lower ends of the bars Gr is hinged a footrest, I, which may be thrown entirely up, as shown in fig. l, or set at any angle to suit the occupant of the chair.
On the sides of the front legs are placed slides J, having casters d at their -lower ends; and on the sides of the rear legs are slides K without casters.
All of these slides are provided with springs e c,- and move in staples or guides f f, on which said springs catch, so as to bold the. slides either up or down. IVhen up the chairl is a rocking-chair; when all are down it is a stationary chair; and when only the slides I are down the chair can be rolled about, which is veryconvenient for invalids.
By unhooking the bracesH the back D may be thrown down, which at the Same time throws the bars G forward, and the toot-rest I also thrown forward makes a bed of it. 'Ihe'back can be held at any iucline by joint-ing the braces H, as shown in lig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the chair A B C, the back D, arm-rests E, braces H', foot-rest I, slides J with easters d, and slides K, all construct-ed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing'l have hereunto set my hand this 28th day ofIVIarch, 1871.
GABRIEL D. HEAIWOLE.
