2 claims. ,(01. 40-107) The present invention relates in general to improvements in devices for designating dates, and relates more specically to various improvements in the construction and operation of calendars or the like.
A primary object of my invention is to provide a new and useful calendar which' is extremely simple and compact in construction, and which is also highly eicient in use and exible in its adaptations. Some of the more specific objects invention are as follows:
To provide an improved date indicating assemblage having maximum utility while occupying minimum space, and which can be built or disposed within various objects such as pencils, pen-holders, lamp-stands, ash-trays, and other relatively elongated tubular bodies. Y To provide an improved date indicator sheet for quickly and accurately designating any date of a predetermined year as to specific day of the week and month. Y
I To provide an improved elongated substantially tubular calendar assemblage which may be quickof the present ly and conveniently'adjusted to denitely indicate any desired date.
To provide an improved1 calendar date sheet which may be produced at minimum cost, and wherein all days and months of each succeeding year are displayed on a single page ofv relatively small size, thereby avoiding necessity Yof tearing ol monthly date sheets and thus wasting paper.
To provide an improved holder for date indicating sheets which can be reproduced in various'shapes and sizes, and which may moreover be conveniently manipulated to indicate the dates and for replacement of the yearly date sheets.
These and other specific objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following detailed description.
A clearcon-ception of the several features constituting the present improvement, and of the mode of constructing and of manipulating a cal- .described herein as being embodied in a simple tubular standard provided with a plane support or base, it is not my desire or intent to lthereby unnecessarilyrestrict the scope or adaptations of the improved features, which are obviously susceptible of embodiment in various objects and devices, such as pencils, pen-holders, lamp-stands,

Referring to the drawings, the improved calendar assemblage shown therein by way of illustration, comprises in general a support or base 8, a tubular casing 9 iixedly mounted in upright position upon the base 8 and having an elongated slot ltherein; a circular tapered lower centering retainer blockv II rotatably secured to the Vbase 8 centrally of the casing 9 by means of a screw I2 or the like; a circular tapered upper centering retainer and manipulating block I3 rotatably conlined within the .upper open end of the casing 9;
a date indicator insert or sh'eet I4 having thereon successive rows or parallel columns of relatively staggered date indicating numerals I5, said insert being adapted to be rolled into tubular formation and confined within the casing 9 in frictional engagement with the tapers of the blocks II, I3; and a date indicator frame or slide I 6 coacting with and movable along the casing slot I0.
The support or base 8 may be of any desired sizeN or shape. The tubular casing 9 may likewise bev formed of any suitable sheet-material, and may have either circular orY any oth'er cross-sectional shape, and when the calendar is used as a novelty or for advertising purposes, this casing 9 may be decorated or provided With advertising matter. The tubular sheet retainer blocks II, I3 may be constructed of wood, plastic or other material, and may be formed with central through openings I'I as shown in Fig. 6, in order to provide passages for wires or mechanical lead feeding mechanisms, and in such' cases the lower pivot screw I 2 should also be made hollow. The upper block I3 may also be provided with a manipulating ange I8 for eiecting convenient rotation thereof. The

ative to each other and so positioned that they will `fall on the proper day of the week, and the casing 9 may also be provided with letters 22 designating the successive days of the week, see
Fig. 3. One simple mode of producing the sheets I4 is to print the numbers I5 appearing in the transverse areas 2l in red or some other distinct color which is different from that used in the remaining numerals, and the areas 2| may be used to designate Sundays. on Sundays, may also be printed in distinctive colors, and as previously indicated, the insert or sheet I4 shown in the drawing is properly produced for the year 1943. One edge of each date sheet I4 may be provided with adhesive in order S0 to permit the sheet I4 to be secured in cylindrical shape as illustrated in Fig. 2, and when thus assembled, the tubular sheet I4 should be adapted to snugly frictionally embrace lthe oppositely tapered portions of the rotary retainer blocks I I,
I3 as shown in Fig. 3.
When the date indicator sheet I4 has been properly produced and applied to the blocks II, I3 within the tubular casing 9 as depicted in Figs.
3 and 4, the flange I8 of the upper retainer and 4Q manipulating block I3, may be utilized to place any one of the twelve vertical rows of dates in alinement with the elongated slot I0 of the casing, by merely rotating the upper block I3. The
blocks II, I3 and the tubular sheet I4 will then 45 be frictionally retained in adjusted position, and as shown in Fig. 3 the month of August has .been positioned in alinement with the casing slot I0. The areas ZI will then be positioned in horizontal alinement with the corresponding week day letters 22 on the casing 9, and the slide I6 may thereafter be adjusted vertically along the slot I0 so as to display any selected date and its week day designation, such as Tuesday, August 17th, within a frame. lowered daily by one spacing of the superimposed numerals, thus giving a correct indication of the successive dates.
From the foregoing detailed description it will be apparent that my present invention provides a calendar or date lindicator which is extremely simple and compact in construction, and which is furthermore efficient and accurate in use and very iiexible in its adaptations. Ihe improved calendar assemblage may be incorporated in many different objects of various sizes and shapes, and the improved inserts or date sheets can be printed or otherwise produced at low cost.

The improved assemblages may be produced in quantity at relatively low cost, and are therefore well suited for novelty and advertising purposes besides having extreme utility. l
It should be understood that it is not desired to limit this invention to the exact details of construction or to the precise mode of -use and operation, herein shown and described, for various modifications within the scope of the claims may occur to persons skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a calendar, a tubular casing having an elongated rectilinear slot extending throughout the major length of the casing and provided with closed opposite ends, a tubular cylindrical calendar insert disposed concentrically within said casing and having parallel staggered monthly date columns successively alineable with said slot when said casing and insert are relatively rotated, said casing having a series of xed week day designations disposed along a side of said slot, an indicating frame having portions slidably confined within said slot, said portions coacting with the interior of said casing and with the exterior of said insert to aid in centering the latter within the casing, and said frame being provided with a sight opening formed to cooperate with said casing and said insert to visibly expose only one selected Week-'day designation and the corresponding month date while the frame conceals the adjoining designations and dates from view, and a manually rotatable centering element for said insert frictionally bound thereto and being journalled in saidcasing for rotation of the insert.
2. In a calendar, a tubular casing having an elongated rectilinear slot extending throughout the major length of the casing and provided with closed opposite ends, a tubular cylindrical calendar insert disposed concentrically within said casing and having parallel staggered monthly date columns successively alineable with said slot when said casing and insert are relatively rotated, said casing having a series of xed week day designations disposed along a. side of said slot, an indicating frame having portions slidably confined within said slot, said portions coacting with the interior of said casing and with the exterior of said insert to aid in centering the latter within the casing, and said frame being provided with a sight opening formed to cooperate with said .casing and said insert to visibly expose only one selected week day designation and the corresponding month date while the frame conceals the adjoining designations and dates from view, a manually rotatable tapered centering element for said insert frictionally bound to one end thereof and being journalled in said casing for rotation of the insert, and another centering element for said insert coacting with the opposite end thereof in axial alinement with said manually rotatable element.
