11 Claims. (01. 2-]174 My invention relates to shields and more particularly to shields applicable for protecting the person while subjecting the hair to hot air from the common drier used in beauty parlors.

An object of my invention is to provide a shield of such shape as to effectively cut 01? the flow of hot air at the hair line, permitting full utilization of the drying eifect of the hot air upon the hair, while preventing the passage of said hot air over the face and neck lest the person be burned or the skin parched.

Another object of my invention is to provide I on my shield means by which the ears are similarly protected.

A further object of my invention is to provide said shield with adjustable features whereby said shields may be of the same size but adaptable to fitdifierent persons.

Another object of my invention is to provide my shield as a flat, cut out paper form when not in useybeing thus adapted for easy packing and storing. 1

Another object of my invention is to provide said shield simply constructed of a flat, cut out sheet of paper having no strings, hooks, and the like. and being adapted for use with one or at the most two simple bobby pins. By virtue of .this feature I am able to supply said shields in great quantity at insignificant cost and in manner extremely inexpensive to the customer or beauty parlor operator. 7 e

Other objects and advantages of this invention, it is believed, will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of one embodiment of my shield shown as used by the wearer.

Figure 2 is a plan view of the shield as it appears unworn.

Figure 3 is a side view of the ear cover shown in Figure 2 in assembled form.

Figure 4 is a plan view of a modification of the attachment device shown in Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a plan view of a modification of the ear cups shown in Figure 2.

Figure 6 is a side view of the ear cups shown .in Figure 5 in assembled form.

Referring to the drawings, a blank piece of heavy paper or other suitable material is cut or stamped out to the form shown in Figure 2 whereby is provided the split, semieoval ring Ill, the inner-circumference of which is shaped to fit closely the ordinary head at approximately the hair line. At the margin I2 is provided the tongue H which is adapted'to co-act with slits It for closing the ring to form a substantially frustro-conical shape cutting off the flow of air at the hair line, as shown in Figure 1. A number of slits I6 are provided-bymean's of which jadjustment to varying head sizes ispermissible. 1

Extending from the inner-circumference of the split ring ID are ovals which form ear cups l8, said ear cups [8 having slits 20 cut thereiriwhich permit overlapping of the surfaces J thereof to form cones as shown in Figure 3. Adjacent said slits- 20 "are the shorter slits- 22 which converge slightly from the parallel in relation to said slits 20. For co-acting with said slits 22"are cut the flaps 24. -When the surfaces of the ear cups 18 are over-lapped,'flaps Meng'a'ge slits 22, preserving the conical shape of said ear cups. 1

Extendingfromthe inner-circumference of the ring I 0 opposite the tongue I4, is the strap. Thestrap 26 is provided to enable the fasten ingjof the shield tothe hair by use of bobby pins; Were this strap 2'6 not provided, the force 'of'the hot air coming from the drier, in addition to the possibility of striking the shield, would tend to displace said shield from the properposition about the hair. shown in Figure 1, 'the'strap'26 lies on-top of the hair to which it is fastened by a hobby pin 28, is'folded back, and another bobby pin 30 grasps hair and strap to hold the shield firmly in position. J Where the use of but one bobby pin is desired; strap 26 may be modified, as is shown in Figure 4', to provide the-stub 32 having a slit 34. The stub 32 merely lies atop thehair while a bobby pin grasps hair and stub, passing through slit 34 to hold the shield firmly in place.

Figures 1, 5 and 6 show in operative position a modified form of the ear cups l8. In this adaptation, the oval 36 has slit 20, as do the ear cups l8. In addition, the flaps 3B and 40 are provided, which, as shown in Figure 6, together fold over to preserve the conical shape.

When the shield is utilized as in Figure 1,. it will provide protection to the eyes, face, ears, and neck while permitting the user to read, knit, and the like during the drying operation.

Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising: a split annular ring; means on said ring for closing said ring in substantially frustro-conioal shape; ear cups on said ring; and an integral projecting element on said ring extending between the ear cups for attaching said ring to the head.

2. A device of the class described comprising: an annular divided ring; means for closing said ring to form a substantially frustro-conical shield; means for securing said shield about the hair line; and ear cups extending from said ring having slits therein permitting the over-lapping of said cups to assume a substantially conical shape.

3. A device of the class described comprising:

an annular divided ring; means for closing said v7 ring to form a substantially frustro-conical shield;

means for securing said shield about the hair line; and ear cups extending from said ring havfurther slits in said ear cups, and flaps cut in said ear cups adapted to co-act with said slits to hold said ear cups in conical shape.

A device. of the class described comprising a split annular ring; means on said ring for closing said ring in substantially frusto-conical shape; ear cups formed integrally on said rin said ear cups having slit means for changing said ear'cups from flat shape to cup shape, and a projection on said ring remote from the closing means for attaching said ring to the head.

. 6.=-A device of the class described comprising: a split. annular ring; means on said ring for closing said ring in a substantially frusto-conical shape; ear cups formed integrally on. said ring, said ear cups having slit means for changing said ear cups fromifiat shape to cup shape, and an element formed integrally with the ring proiecting inwardly therefrom symmetrically between sa-id ear cups adapted to facilitate the support of the ring on the head.

7'. A device of the class described comprising: an annular divided ring; means for closing said ring. to form a substantially frusto-conical shield; and ear cups: extending from said ring having slits therein permitting the overlapping 4 of said cups to assume a substantially conical shape.

8. A device of the class described comprising: a flat paper divided ring; means for connecting adjoining ends of the divided ring to encircle the head of a wearer; and a long narrow paper strap formed integrally with the ring projecting inwardly therefrom to a position near the center of the ring and adapted to facilitate the support of the ring on the wearers head, and ear cups on the ring positioned on opposite sides of the strap.

A device of the class described comprising: a fiat paper divided ring; means for connecting adjoining ends of the divided ring to encircle the head 015 a wearer; a paper strap formed integrally with the ringprojecting from the inner circumference thereof and adapted to facilitate the support'of the ring on the wearers head; and ear cups located symmetrically with respect to said strap formed integrally with the ring.

A device of the class described comprising. a flat annular divided ring; means for connecting adjoining ends of the divided ring to encircle the headof a wearer; and a stub extending radially inwardly from the inner circumference of said divided ring and having a radial slit formed therein. A- device of the class described comprising: a flat annular divided ring; means for connecting adjoining ends of the divided ring to encircle the head of a wearer; a stub extending radially inwardly from the inner circumference of the divided ring and having a radial slit formed therein; andear cups formed integrally with the ring and disposed symmetrically with respect to the stub extending. from the inner circumference of said annular ring.
