tor which may be readily placed over the V I wearers hat and which will conform to the shape of the hat without the necessity of adjusting the protector to fit the hat, and which will completely enclose the hat so that no' scams or openings exist by which rain or snow may gain access to the hat itself.

Another object of the invention is to enable the hat protector to be made of relatively thin, inelastic, moisture resistant material, which can be folded up into a very small and compact form when not in use and carried in a hand bag or the like.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a simple and neat appearing hat cover or protector having features of adjustment whereby the same may be used with hats of different sizes.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out, or will become apparent, as the specification proceeds.

\Vith the above indicated objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction-s and combinations and arrangement of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which latter show embodiments of the invention as at present preferred.

In said drawings:

Fig. 1 is .a perspective view of the hat cover looking from the rear as it appears in use;

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the rearward closure flap displaced to better illustrate the parts below; and

Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the hat cover body as it appears before the parts are joined together in the manner shown in Fig. 1.

The hat cover body 10 in this instance includes a crown portion 11 and a brim portion 12, the brim portion being of any desired shape and being preferably stitched to the crown 11 as indicated at 13-.

The'crown portion 11 is preferably shaped to conform to; a conventional type of close fitting hat, and in this instance includes a top portion 14;, side portions 15 and 16 and front 13011110118117, 1.8 and 19, all suitably stitched to each other, and to the brim.

To enable thehat cover-to be readily placed over the hat,- while the hat is on the users head, the back of the hat protector preferably includes features of adjustment. For

this; purpose the side portions 15 and 16 and brim 12 'preferably have rearward overlapping portions 120 and 21, these rearward overlapping portions 20 and 21 being arranged so that an opening 22 is provided at the'rearward part ofthe crown. The central portion 14 is provided with a downwardly extending, outwardly flared flap 22a which is adapted to cover the opening 22. The side portions 15 and 16 are preferably connect-1 ed bymeans of an elastic tape 23 at a point slightly above the brim 12, and the rearward extensions 20 and 21 are also preferably similarly connected substantially along the line of the brim, or slightly thereabove, by means" of elastic tapes 24: and 25, one end of each tape'beingconneeted to one of the rearward extensions and the opposite end of eachtape ;.being connected tothe opposite rearward extension 1 portion. Theprsent hat cover can be quickly and easily applied to the hat and just as easily and quickly removed therefrom; and when not in use can be folded into a very small and compact package which can be conveniently carried in practically any type of purse or hand bag.

The hereinbefore described construction admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention; therefore, it

is the wish not to be limited to the precise arrangements shown and described, which are as aforesaid, by way of illustration'merely.

In other words the scope of protection contemplated is to be taken solely from the ap-' pended claims, interpreted as broadly as is consistent with the prior art.

WVhat is claimed as new is: Y 1. A hat protector and the like includin a crown portion, a brim portion, said crown portion including side portions having overlapping rearward extension portions arranged to provide an opening at the rearward part of the hat protector, and a centralportion having a downwardly extending, outwardly flared flap portion adapted to cover said opening, an elastic-tape connect-- 1 ing said rearwardly extending side portions at a point above said brim, elastic tapes connecting said rearward extensions at a point substantially along the line of said brim, one end of each of said tapes being connected to one of said rearward extensions and the opposite end of each tape being connected to the other rearward extension, and elastic tapes to secure said rearward crown flap to said side portions, whereby said rearward crown flap covers said opening in different positions of adjustment of-said elastically connected portions.

2. A hat protector and the like including a crown portion and a brim portion, said crown portion including a top portion, side portions and front portions, said side portions having overlapping rearward portions arranged to provide an opening at therearward part of the hat protector, said top portion having a downwardly extending, outwardly flared flap portion adapted to cover said opening, an elastic tape connecting said rearwardly extending side portions at a point above said brim, elastic tapes connecting said rearward extensions at a point substantially along the line of said brim, one end of each J of said last mentioned tapes being connected to one of said rearward extensions and the opposite end of each tape beingconnected to the other rearward extension, and elastic tapes to secure said rearward crown flap to said side portions, whereby'said rearward crown flap covers said opening in different positions of adjustment of sald elastically connected portions. 7
